Defeat the middle east without firing a shot?

    I wish could stop importing oil from the middle east. We SHOULD be able to stop importing from there if only we could drill over here and increase the production and distribution of Ethanol. I've read where we import 1/2 our oil from the middle east. The rest comes from the US, Canada, and Mexico. If we can go to E85 in the near future, wouldn't that mean we would being needing 75% less oil (We're using 10% Ethanol now)? Wouldn't that eliminate the need to import oil from over there. I know we still need oil for plastics, ect. If we could do that the middle east can GTH. Would we still support Israel? just my 2 cents worth.

    If we quit buying oil, they would do ok selling the oil to China, Europe, and India.
    If everybody quit buying oil chaos would ensue in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait etc in about 12 hours.

    Hypothetically, if we (The US) stopped buying middle-eastern oil, cold-turkey, how long would it take for ALL middle eastern nations to fall into civil war?

    About as long as it would take us to. Without oil, this country stops very quickly.

    I couldn't disagree more. The middle-east has 1 industry, oil, from which everyone gets there livelihood in one way or the other. The US has a lot of industries. - but take oil, a big US industry with a lot of profits (most of which go to a small group of people). A total stop to the buying/using of US oil would not result in much change for the man-on-the-street. The republican party would lose a lot of donations :) but I can't see mass panic.

    I think its highly unlikely that the US could ever produce enough ethonal to get off oil. But we can reduce the amount of imported oil quite a bit.

    If we start using the coal we have for power plants, invest in more wind turbines, nuke plants, biodesiel, solar farms and other optional forms of energy we just might stand a chance to cut the use of the middle eastern oil to a trickle. But how many years will that take, 20+ most likely.

    Every step of the way we will be fought by enviormentalists that will find something wrong with all the sources of energy to keep their jobs, plus continue the fat fees going to the epa and other independent groups.

    Not viable, due to the harm it would cause to the verrigated-3 gilled-slap-happy-monk fish, which is ALREADY on the endangered list. I wouldn't be surprised if no one could even find one.

    As I understand it, we import far more oil from South America than we do from the Middle East. Most of the middle east production goes to Europe and Asia.

    So whatever we do, the Saudis will still have their oil profits.

    And how is everyone going to get to work without oil? And how is all that produce going to get to market without oil? And how are all those trucks going to run without oil? And how are many people going to heat their homes without oil? How are those farm tractors going to run without oil? Without oil, this country stops.

    Not far more from South America, just a bit more from all others combined:
    Here's where our petroleum comes from:

    * USA Petroleum Production
    39%
    * Petroleum Imports from OPEC---26%
    * Non-OPEC Petroleum Imports---35% (Canada, Mexico, Persian Gulf, etc.)

    So, we are currently depending on other countries to supply us with 61% of the oil we need. Here are the OPEC countries:
    http://www.opec.org/aboutus/

    And here is where all the OPEC oil goes:
    http://tinyurl.com/33eezo

    So, take all the mid-eastern oil out and you are talking instant $150.00 per barrel easy. At least $5.00 a gallon for gas, probably much more, with lines at the pump due to shortages.

    You misunderstand. I am not saying not use oil, that could not happen, I am just saying don't buy it from certain sources like the middle east.

    both points absolutely right. one of major factors of oil prices being so high is that china and india are creating a huge demand. remember, just a couple of years ago (2005 i believe) china tried to buy unocal.

    still, if we stopped buying from OPEC and drilled our own, that could cause some temporary instability but who knows what the long-term effects would be since we'd be alienating OPEC members that at least aren't 100% hostile to us.

    imho -- we should've nuked the hell out of middle-east a long time ago and not worry about the friggen thing ever again, it seems that it's the only language muslims understand.

    I understood your point, but if you don't buy any from the middle east, there is not enough coming from other places to make up for it. And the dems and the tree huggers won't let us drill any more of our own.

    The power of petroleum is not in the hands of those who might refuse to purchase it, it is in the hands of those who might refuse to sell it. Think back to 1973: The Middle East tap was turned off and the price of oil tripled over night followed quickly by gas lines around the block and the start of high inflation, a long term recession and sky high interest rates. The world market for petroleum is very tight and any crude that we might suddenly refuse to purchase will be quickly snapped up by any of several other countries hungry for petroleum. People in the US are already crying like little babies over $3 per gallon gasoline based only on market price so how will they feel about paying $6 per gallon for gasoline to just prove a point? The average working stiff (and American working class hero) looking to fill up his car is not on some on-line forum and hell bent on crushing Islam, he just wants to buy some gasoline!

    I still think that Ethanol is a viable solution but not in the short term. We need to think long term. Corn is not the only source. Brazil powers most of their cars from ethanol made from sugar. Like I posted earlier, if we can just cut half our gasoline useage by going to ethanol we won't be dependant on the OPEC and the middle east. The question I have is this, I keep hearing about E85. Why not E50 or E60. Anything is better than depending on OPEC for our oil.

    The problems with Ethanol are finally starting to come out. Depending on what reports you read, it takes from 3 to 4.5 gallons of water just to make 1 gallon of ethanol. One plant can use 1.5 million gallons of water every day. In places where the plants have been running, the water table has dropped dramatically, with the plants offering to drill deeper wells for the towns. There is also a report out now that shows ethanol actually pollutes more than gasoline, the pollutants are just different chemicals. And if you study the entire ethanol equation, taking into account all the fuel used to produce it, you only come out about 5% ahead. The best thing we could do is build a lot of nuclear plants, like France has, and get our electrical power from nuclear. Then go to electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.

    Our little party in Iraq has proven so cost effective one can only imagine the price of simply "taking" all of the oil that we want. Since rolling into Iraq we have managed to buy a little less than 1 billion barrel of crude oil from that country. We have thrown over $300 million into that ****hole so that works out to over $300 per barrel of crude, not counting what we paid in market price. Since we can currently buy crude oil for $70 anywhere in the world, "taking" oil is no baragn.
