Rats/poison/pets?

Since my old dog, Jake, died I have started experiencing rats in my machine shed. My new dog is just not as aggressive as Jake was, and my cats are apparently overfed. My question: If I poison the rats, do I pose a risk to my cats and dog in the unlikely event they should meet a rat and decide to eat it? I'm also using traps, but I want to launch a full-scale attack. I just don't want to poison my pets in the process. Has anyone out there had actual experience with poison when pets are around? The poison web sites seem to tiptoe around the subject without really answering the question. Thanks. [:(]

    Well obviously you don't want your pets to get the poison. WIth that said, living on a farm we always seemed to have problems and we used the green stuff forget the name of it, and cats and dogs would stay away from the stuff. However, I am sure there are some rat poisons that this would not happen with. You can also locate spots were a dog or cat can't get to, but a rat can easily do. If a mice or rat can fit their head through a whole, then can get their body through.

    I called the number on a pack of Lowe's rat poison once and asked the lady if the dead rats might kill hawks and blacksnakes. She said it would kill pretty much anything that ate them. I asked if she could recommend another poison and she said they are all the same thing.

    I would think that if one of your pets ate one of the dead rats it could kill them to. Also don't they treat the poison so it acts as bait? I would think it would be attractive to any animal. I don't have personal experience but I would stick to traps myself with two dogs and cats running around. There is a reason those websites tiptoe around it.

    The best way to kill rats is either the traditional traps (like a huge mouse trap) or snipe them with a .22. I just like to see them dead. With poisen, you never know if you got them.

    we leave our feed bags out in the open floor of the barn. I have not found one with a hole in it for over a year. We have 4 to 6 barn cats. If we find any sign of rodent activity the cat food gets put away for a few days.

    Problem solved.

    A dog or cat eating a poisoned rat will most likely get some of the poison too. It might not be enough to kill it but will make it sick for a while.

    I don't think they will eat the poison bait.

    Take a coke bottle, (ok, any piece of glass) put it in a flour sack (or a old pillow case) and smash it into fine shards, take the glass shards and dump them in the rat holes.[:D]

    Thanks for the advice, folks. You have echoed my concerns -- poisoned rat could equal poisoned cat if cat eats rat. I think I'll buy a few more traps. (I noticed early this morning I got a rat overnight. Glad to see it gone, but, I fear, more to go.)[:(]

    A lot of those poisons are Warferin, called cumidin when given to humans. It retards or stops clotting, in the case of mice/rats the dose is enough to cause them to bleed through their caplaries into their tissues. It would affect any animal eating a dead or dying rodent. Traps are a better method, but may not completely eliminate them.

    Years ago a friend had a chicken house with a dirt floor. It would get rats from time to time. We would go in, run out all the chickens and lock the door. We dropped a white ferret on the floor and stood back to back with .22 pistols. After 3 minutes of ferret work, the rats would boil out of their burrows. Great sport, and the white ferret was easy to spot so we did not shoot him.

    If the rodents eat a sufficient amount of the poison it surely will kill your pets if they eat them! Most of these poisons contain a blood thinner. The most used is warfare sodium aka Warfarin and coumadin. your pets could bleed to death right before your eyes.
    The only antidote i know of is Vitamin K .
