58 Today
Not too bad of a day. I dealt with the broker and opened a 529 account for my dad, sold a few bushels of soybeans on the market, planted about 1500 sweet corn seeds with the John Deere planter, hit quite a few acres of ground with the new Sunflower soil finisher, and started planting corn after switching the planter back to "real" corn.
I got the sunflowers planted in the dove fields and a couple of patches of sweet corn planted yesterday and another sunflower patch planted on Saturday, so I should be ready to kill a couple of birds of peace come early fall.[}:)]
That's not too bad for an old retired guy of 58 today.[:)]
Just got in from the fields, and that's enough for today.

We'll have to get that done this summer Cubs, but I'm pretty tied up with crop work right now, and will be for a few weeks yet. I've cut a couple of cords of wood out of old fence rows in the last few days, and that's actually quite a bit when you are trimming limbs instead of just cutting trees. It's a hell of a lot of work, way too much of it is over your head with a chainsaw, and the wood yield is garbage, but the limbs are hard on equipment if you don't cut them down. 0 -
I'll be 40 shortly....my corns in, 16 row planter does'nt take to long...trying to spray some winter wheat,but has gotten wet here for a change.....got aprox 450 acres of millet to plant but thats not till june 0 -

We're just getting around to having warm enough soil to plant and having dry enough ground to get out there. One of the larger farmers in the area who always gets started early just told the main seed supplier in our area that he needed to get some more corn since he needed to replant the first three farms he planted because the corn turned sideways trying to get through the crust in cold soil he planted too early.
That's about a multi-thousand dollar mistake just in costs alone, besides the reduction in yield, but the really large farmers try to outguess the weather and beat the odds, and they usually don't guess right.
I've said before and I'll still contend that there are way too many folks who are good farmers, but lousy businessmen. The objective should be to make money, not raise record crops. I can raise medium yield crops at lower cost and make more money than the folks who raise maximum yield crops, yet spend maximum amounts of money producing a few bushels more output.0 -

i kinda have a sixth sence for weather deals i guess.....i no till into two years of wheat stubble .....i got my corn into perfect conditions when i planted not to dry not to wet .....we have now gotten three inches of rain since i planted and three inches of rain here in two years of wheat stubble = long time till you can get back into it to plant now its going to be in the 80's corn in the ground and three inches of rain...dont get much better than that in these parts[;)]0 -

If you like reading, try Gene Logsdon "At Nature's Pace" There is a lot of truth about farming economically. It's a little extreme but my favorite quote was something like "With the exception of electric fence, there's not a lot of new technology that is worth the money."
How accurate does one really need to plant? I'm not saying the old JD plate planter is good enough. The Max-Emerge is a great planter, but how much more of a consistant population does one need?
