Potentially, the most devastating terrorist attack
Is the one that hasn't been mentioned by the media so far... a large scale small arms strike in an urban environment.
Think about it, our borders with both mexico and canada are about as broken as the haul of the Titanic... we've seen proof of this through the enormous amount of illegal immigrants who have been able to make it into the country. That's not to mention the thousands of miles of shoreline and airspace that aren't monitored. There's not a coastguard speedboat every 300 yards from beach to beach. And there aren't radar systems over every possible terrain a plane could land on.
From bribing customs officials for fake passports, to posing a poor mexican with no identification, there are numerous ways for terrorists to enter the country. The 19 hijackers who carried out 9/11 made it in a ok. So let's face it, it wouldn't be impossible for 100, or even 1,000 highly trained terrorist to make it into this country.
What about small arms? There are tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of full auto AK-47s floating all over Africa. And found in various terrorist training camps ranging from the Philippines to Columbia.
So who is going to doubt that the 2 elements required for this type of attack are both present and practical? It would simply be a matter of al qaeda, or some other terrorist network, organizing a plan to carry something like this out.
Most of the terrorists training videos released focus on this type of attack. While some demonstrate how to make bombs, most have exhibited people practicing martial arts, kidnapping scenarios, exercises such as room clearing, diving through tunnels, crossing monkey bars; and most notably, handling of firearms. How many people have seen the video where terrorist are shooting pistols at a large video screen with bill clinton's image on it?
So what would happen if terrorist acquired a city bus, loaded it up, and stopped right in the middle of a downtown NYC intersection? Obviously, they'd all start getting off the bus one by one, very rapidly, and mowing down everyone in sight. And once everyone on the street was either dead of ran too far away, they'd probably just take their remaining ammo, and enter the nearest hotel or apartment building, and go room to room killing people.
Who is to stop this from happening? Would it be that hard for terrorists to steal, buy, or disguise a city bus, or even a school bus? They could just as easily use several large vans. If they had their guns out of view from the vehicles windows, the only thing a pedestrian on the street would notice is perhaps all the passengers were dark skinned arab males. If they called the police to report that, do you really think they'd have time to completely stop the attack?
And what about the cops? Is the cops body armor going to protect them from a 7.62 round? Is the cops sissy little glock any match for a full auto AK with a 100 shot mag? Are the cops as well trained as the terrorist? Are the cops going to out number the terrorist? How many cops will be in the particular area, and how long will it take a few SWAT teams to respond?
In NYC, the citizens would be cattle for the slaughter. Unless you're politically connected, it's illegal for pretty much all civilians to carry handguns. No chance of defending yourself there..
It could be even worse if it happened in some really remote, small town. If they killed everyone off before any outside communication could be made, nobody may even know it happened for days... and they could move on to the next rural village.
Who questions the number of terrorist out there who would be willing to do this? How many suicide bombers have we seen in Palestine and Israel who are willing to blow themselves up? How many terrorist still remain out there in many parts of the world? The survivors would just keep shooting until they ran out of ammo, then get back on their bus to try and escape - probably futilely at that point.
But many people would they leave dead in their wake? Millions of pedestrians walk the streets of NYC each day. And high rise hotels and apartments house thousands of occupants in close proximity to each other... it doesn't help either that the 7.62 easily penetrates dry wall and other building materials.
So, is this in fact such an unlikely scenario? Apparently to the brady bunch it is. That whole thing about a militia and the right to bear arms. You think the nearest army base is going to be able to respond in time to save people?
It would have to be a surgical strike. You've got thousands of citizens mixed in with dozens of terrorist wielding AKs. How long would it take a tank to move down a NYC street? A jet dropping a bomb on the area would kill more innocents than terrorist.
If citizens were allowed to carry, they might not be that much more effective than the cops with their sissy glocks, but they'd sure bring an end to the situation much faster, and take all of the terrorist down with them. Even if the terrorist weren't outgunned, they'd be outnumbered - and most importantly, by stopping them with haste, many lives would be saved... All of the loaded magazines and cartridges in their backpacks would be sitting on the ground with their bodies - not for use in the next victim because they have little means of defending themselves.

Clarentavious, you are right. This type of attack would be easier to pull off than 9-11.
It would be more difficult to do in the small town, as many more civilians would be armed there. I can see deer hunters with bolt guns that are much more accurate and powerful than AKs taking up a post 200 yards from the terrorists and cleaning up on the terrorists.
In New York City, you have described the scenario pretty well.
Another terror tactic, which has already been very effectively done by a Muslim, is the sniper attack. This black Muslim who did the sniper rampage in the DC area a few years back had a three state area terrorized for weeks. It was the lead story on the national news. Schools were closed, people were afraid to go to work. Terrorism at its purest. This guy only fired about 15 well aimed shots.0 -
Yes, this could happen. Or they could also quickly take over a school and hold it hostage as the Chechen terrorists did in Russia a few years back. That was an ugly scene.
What you describe would still take some type of planning and there is a chance that they could all die in the attempt (after they take out many people, that is). What is surprising to me is that there have not been any single kidnapping/beheading crimes as of yet. It seems this would be one of the easiest ways to foment terror. Two or three guys in a van could snatch someone and later post the results on the internet. Plus, there is a decent chance they could get away with it and live to do it again in any other part of the country at a later date.0 -

- They won't do this because it is a HUGE waste of resources with very little gained for the expense.
True, terrorists don't value life very much, but in spite of the havoc they would cause, the return on investment would be low.
Each terrorist has to be trained, fed, equipped, etc. this takes a long time and a LOT of money to do, even though their training is not up to true military standards. Yeah, in an attack like this, they could kill a bunch of people, but they would all die too.
Add to this the fact that pooling together a BUSLOAD of terrorists would dramatically raise the possibility of the plot being discovered. More people = Greater chance someone screws up and gets everyone caught.
Terrorists aren't stupid.
The true way to cause panic and death would be to sneak a single operative accross the Mexican border with a load of C4, go to a crowded Walmart on Saturday afternoon in Dallas texas, place the bomb where it will do the most damage, set the time, and leave.

If terrorists really wanted to create havoc all they would need to do is destroy the cell phone towers. About 90% of the cars on the roads would crash as the drivers attention is now focused fully on the non working phone, every woman between the age of 18 to 80 would stop dead in their tracks to simply stare at the silent phone, even schoolkids, who have lost the ability to communicate directly, simply wouldn't know what to do next. Imagine what would happen to the economy if, say, 100 terrorists each set off a bomb at a shopping mall or grocery store on a Saturday afternoon across all 50 states in small and medium communities. When Charles Whittman started sniping off people from the top of the tower in Austin in 1966, the first reaction from many people once they heard the news was to grab their deer rifles and go running to the scene to help the police.
Every time he stuck his head up to shoot, he had dozens of private civilian volunteers, trying to protect their community from a terrorist, banging shots off at him.
Today, I bet nobody would bother coming. The attitude is not the same. Plus, the police would probably shoot anyone who showed up within a mile of the scene with a rifle, and later blame the whole thing on private citizens and their guns.0 -
