There's always something to keep kids awake. When I was a kid it was the fear that the ruskies were going to annihilate us with nuclear weapons because they didn't care enough about their own lives to realize that by destroying us, they also surely would be destroyed. The cold war was real and serious, but Mutually Assured Destruction kept us all safe in the end.

I happen to think climate change is real and serious, but it isn't something that should cause children to lose sleep. It's something we need to deal with rationally--like by adopting Kyoto protocols as several major US metropolitan areas have done, in defiance of federal leadership. Sorry, I'll admit that was inflammatory and out of place in this post. I happen to believe it, but the important point is that kids should not have to lose sleep over this issue, whether or not you believe climate change is real.

My mother was a child during the great depression. She's never talked about losing sleep over financial worries but it's pretty clear that her money-handling habits were learned during a period of financial uncertainty. So I imagine that she lay awake at night worrying about money...when she lived on a farm (place to produce food) in a house (wholly owned) in Wisconsin (where deer are plentiful). Then, as now, there was something for children to lose sleep about, that children should not have been losing sleep about.

There are places on the planet where children really do have worries to keep them awake at night. For most (and I do say most) of the USA, this simply is not the case.

Kind of like some of us were during the cold war. When I was kid I remember being told many times about the nukes that were pointed directly at our area.

Get the kids away from the tv set. Myabe they'll learn to trust Mom and Dad (the people who love them) over AL Gore (who wants to rule them).
