Bass Pro opened a new store about 5 minutes from where I work about a year ago. I can't believe I'm still married. I'm in there at least once a week.

Yep, I've been a big fan of Bass Pro since it opened its store in Denver. I like Cabela's, too, but they ain't here yet.

And, FWIW, Cabela's should be ashamed if they're saying Bass Pro is just a fishing store. That's an outright lie. One thing I've promised everyone I've spoken to on the subject is that when I graduate in August and have my MBA in Marketing, I will not lie about my products and I will not lie about my competitors. I will fashion things in such a manner as to highlight the best points and be truthful about what I'm servicing or selling.

The bass pro shop in Broken arrow does not carry reloading supplies, the manager told me the same thing they are going to focus on fishing. Ya know they have like 10 isles of rubber worms now. [8D]

I will be making a trip to the cabelas and bass pro in KC soon myself.

Ehler Dave maybe you can wait and hit both the Bass Pro's it will be a while before the one in KC Mo opens but it will be bigger and better that the new one on the kansas side.If you want to bring your other half (if you have one) just leave her at the legends shopping area or Nebraska furniture store and you will have all day for your shopping.[:D] bring lots of money we need help paying for all the fun here. But if you can't wait come on there's still lot to see and buy, Cabela's trophy room will nock you eyes out. Big ones[:D][:D][:p][^] Yes Bass Pro has alot of fishing and boats but has quite a bit of hunting stuff. It will hurt Cabela's for a while, I just check the Newspapers for the best add hahhhahhhaha I have the wants and not enough money.[:D][:D]

Spaniel - you will say and do what the ownership wants, or you WILL be out of work a lot.

If you are determined to only do what you say, start looking, right now, for ways to immediately start your own shop after graduating.

Idaelism is wonderful, but the priority is feeding your family (and yourself) and paying the mortgage/rent.

Put this post in your day planner to look at in 5 years. If I am wrong, and I hope I am, I'll buy you the best dinner you can pick, in any city in the country, and I'll pay the cost of getting you there.

Best wishes in your chosen career.

In the mid eighties I worked at the original, and at that time only, Bass Pro Shops. I remember hearing about big companies trying to buy Johnny Morris out, but he wouldn't sell. He was planning to franchise, like Cabela's was doing. It's worked out well for him.
His dad was a prominent businessman in Springfield,Mo. He was into a chain of liquor stores, dry cleaners, real estate, etc. Johnny first sold fishing supplies out of some of his dad's liquor stores. He was in the right business at the right time.
He also didn't over pay his help. It was a fun place to work, but pay was lousy, benefits were non-existant, and there was no ladder to climb.
I still shop there, I can afford to now that I don't work there. Oh, and they did have a 10% employee discount, but it didn't apply to guns or boats.

Interesting. The local Bass Pro here has about 1/4th of the store dedicated to hunting, probably equal to the size of the fishing department. Camping and shoes takes up the other 1/4, with the last being general clothing. Of course, I'm not considering the indoor boat showroom, just general merchandise.

All things considered I prefer Cabela's to BassPro, including the original in Springfield. It is unlikely you will see Cabela's prices come down, BassPro will raise prices after the grand opening.

I understand exactly what you're saying, and I'm prepared to do that. I've quit jobs before because they wanted me to do something I was unwilling to do. I've done this without having a back-up plan, and whenever I've been asked why I left a previous job, I answered honestly and I was respected for my opinion.

It worked well for me and I managed to hold down 15 years at my previous employer.

Idealism is great, but I put tremendous value at being able to look at myself in the mirror every morning and sleeping at night with a clear conscious. It has worked well my entire adult life so far.

i was talking with some local employers and commerce friends here and they mentioned that wallyworld is dumping its sewing and fabric section nationwide in order to replace it with strictly fish and tackle supplies. seems they want in on the market too.
my wife is furious...as you could imagine![:0]
