Why is it against the law?
Seems to me that a lot of things presently against the law are there either without good reason or are there because they subsidize organized crime, who prevents the laws repeal.
This would apply to most if not all of the vice and controlled substance laws, a considerable number of traffic and vehicle laws and in general any action on one's part that doesn't impact someone else such as robbery, murder, assault, etc.
Seems to me that if the police departments spent their resources solving crimes against people, and the laws were intended to regulate rather than prohibit other behaviors that those with differing life styles found offensive, that there would be a significant drop in crime.
For example, say cocaine was listed as a drug of limited use- one could buy aspirin strength by signing for it, stronger strengths available with prescription. Since it would no longer be illegal, there would be no drug cartel, no billion dollar business, no expensive war on drugs, and so on.
If I were king, this and a few other ideas would be what I'd enact. Along with firing the entire Minneapolis-Saint Paul airport police department.

I think drugs should be legal and so should prostitution. I think legalizing drugs would erase 70% of crime in America. I also think its a persons RIGHT to put into their body whatever they want. 0 -
Drugs are big business. On both sides.
Imagine if legalized how many cops, judges, lawyers, prison guards, ect. jobs would go away or dwindle.
Not to mention all the revenue from fines.

because very few people care how they're being governed. when was the last time you scrutinized some city ordinances about to be passed? that's how it turns out that they do what they want.

What makes the most money for "the Man", citing a speeder or pot smoker, or arresting someone for murder? Only "players" in society are worth hassling because they will pay the fine. An outlaw, by definition, is outside the scope of society and not considered a player.
What do cities do with destitute homeless? Arrest them for loitering? Nope, no profit in it. They just run them out of town.
The status quo of the country would change overnight if pot was decriminalized. Who would suffer? The alcohol industry and the entire criminal justice system. That would include;
Cops
Judges
Probation Officers
Prison Wardens
Correctional Officers
Lawyers
Prosecutors
DEA
Court Employees
Bailbondsmen
Tow Truck Operators
Alot of the above people would lose their jobs.
Seizure of assets (cash, property, real estate), which is legal stealing, would be curtailed. Bribery of individuals involved would probably drop off too. Since less booze would be consumed, drunk driving deaths would drop off also.
In short, no one wants to change the laws except the people.0 -
While I don't smoke (anything) myself - I kind of like the idea in the Netherlands, where they have kind of like a coffe-bar - but with hashish instead.
It largely eliminates the need to buy it on a streetcorner illegally.
Personally I think that instead of destroying the narcotics - they should rather sell the confiscated stuff in certain "coffe-shops".0 -

+1...I agree with you..coke/pot..put a tax stamp on it, sell it to those 21 or older, regulate the strength, you just cut out the middle man...and just destroyed the economy of some of our Mexican/Central/South American "allies"..plus all those unemployed prison guards could be put to good use on road crews patching up potholes and repairing "structually unsafe" bridges.0 -

Yeah right legal drugs.. Ought to solve the problem.. and give them legal guns with no felony arrest. Maybe all the crackheads will kill each other. Then the drug problem would be solved.
