Greetings,
The answer is "YES" ... These helmets are located at each repair locker. They are to be worn during "General Quarters" when the ships goes to battle stations.
Thereason these particular helmets are painted red is because they are assiged to a repair locker (fire fighting and damage control) Helmets worn topside and/or at gun mounts etc are painted "haze gray"
The "REP 3" on the helmet identifies it as belonging to repair locker number 3. Repair 3 is usually located in the "aft" part of the ship. Repair 1 in the forward part, and repair #5 midships. Larger ships have numerous repair lockers.
I could go into much more detail about location of lockers and specific battle station duties ... but ... I am concerned that some "Raghead red root chewer" is surfing websites looking for info they can use to hit a vulnerable spot. Well, the SOB's will get no help from me on that !
Oh by the way ..... the Navy has converted to a new style helmet and the one you have there is no longer in use (M43 painted fire red)

That's the outer steel "pot" section ...great to shave out of!
fshfndr ...we just hung our kesters over a tree limb to take a dump! ...But maybe you "Navy guys" did things different!?? *L*0 -
They are also great for making battle field stew, or popping pop corn. I thought we were robbed of a great tool when they swtiched to Kevlars. 0 -

I was on the USS HORNET taking a tour when I saw the red helmets, they were on top of lockers at the repair stations just as you described. [8D]
I also have this old WWII era grey painted helmet marked RM
I think it might be for a navy radioman? do you know what RM stands for? or maybe repairman?0 -
RM might have been for a sound powered phone talker.
rarily would someone make claim to a repair locker helmet pot with paint. the liner yes, not the pot. gray means that helmet was used above decks. maybe even a forward bow watch or sponson watch.0
