Full length guide rod?
What's the purpose of putting a full-length guide rod in a 1911A1, besides to make it a pain in the keister to disassemble/assemble?
I've read in several Clint Smith articles that he sees it as useless...but, I figure it's GOT to have a reason to exist.
Does it enhance reliablity, accuracy, sexual prowess, what?
Should I just replace it with a standard 1911 set up? I've got a Rock Island Tactical, I'm happy with it except for...well, you get the idea.

My midsized rock, and my compact rock both have full length guide rods as does my tactical.
The mid and compact have a hole drilled in them to fit a paper clip in to ease in tear down and assembly.
I am going to get my tactical done with the same type of thing in the next week or two.0 -
That's an idea...how far back from the end of the rod is the hole drilled? 0 -

On the mid it is about 1 1/2 inches back. That would be about right for the tactical too I believe.

its designed to take your money out of your pocket and put it in someone elses. they are 100% junk, crap, and worthless....unless used in conjunction with OTHER SYSTEMS working in unison, hand fitted and matched to ensure the bbl goes back into the exact same place every time. numerous other systems have been tried over an 80 year period with same or better results and done with LESS junk. i/e: the famous berdan mouse trap, etc... 0 -

a guide rod is designed to assist the bbl and slide to return into lock up aligned with the bbl bushing exactly in the same place every time. the spring is curvy and tends to twist and curl as it coils up and back out. the guide rod gives the slide recoil spring a guide to stay straight. but its worthless unless the bbl bushing is matched to the bbl. the bbl pin is matched to the frame. the slide is hand lapped to the frame, etc.... 0 -

I don't have that much of a problem since I have done it a few times. But the hole would just make it a little easier.

empty gun, safety off, drop mag, cock hammer,
grab slide and push rearward to align takedown notch curve with slide release lever. push slide lever release out. grab slide and as it comes off forward, GRAB TIGHTLY and hold on to that spring and all the guts REAL GOOD like and viola. its off. reverse for assembly.[;)]0 -

Drilling that small hole will not ruin the gun. The Rock tactical was the only model that did not come with the hole allready drilled for take down porposes. All the others with full length guide rods have it.0 -

drilling a hole in a gun to help a worthless mod is ruining a good gun. drilling a hole in a gun as per factory instructions to improve the gun and make it comply with an authorized upgrade, ok.

Bobski--I'm not too worried about hurting the value, this is a shooter, and I doubt a Rock Island will appreciate greatly. Also, when I stripped it this afternoon, I had the devil's own time keeping the furshlugginer rod/spring assembly from hanging up on the frame when re-assembling; I've NEVER had a problem getting a stock 1911 back together, but every one with a full-lenght GR I've ever had I've had to fight it all the way. I also don't like that I NEED a barrel bushing wrench to dis/re-assemble this critter. It may just be easier to replace the full-length rod with a standard length rod...
<sigh> ...and people ask me why I like Glocks and USP's over 1911's.0 -
I hate a full length guide rod.....I always replace them with a simple GI style,,I have several 2pc ones over in my gun box and just gave away three 1pc and four 2pc ones to someone who is doing some building of some plain shooters with scrap parts.I can take down a GI one handed ,,,can you do that with a full length ?? the point is..youre wasting effort on a gun that isnt a race gun. its an almost race gun.
