it looks like a cap but has no threads inside at all. its iron. any idea?[?] hard to believe these mystery pics have been going for over 4 years now. im about 3/4 thru the old shop. im sure there will be more next trip home! thanks thus far![:)]

It almost looks like a nut splitter to me. The ones I have seen are somehow screwed down onto rusted nuts and split them in half. I don't know if that is a version of one of those or not. 0 -
I really enjoy helping you to identify your Dads stuff, but I have no idea what this is. Islander1989 may be right on this. It looks as if it's a tip you would put in a press or c-clamp to split machine nuts. 0 -
That looks identical to a piece in the clutch system on my 1965 Chevy pickup. It has a threaded rod going through it, and presses up against the throwout bearing. The threaded piece doesn't screw into this piece though, it just goes through it.

bobski, does the larger hole in the center go all the way through and, if so, is it the same diameter throughout?
It looks like there is a hole that runs laterally through the "wing" at the top. Is that in fact a hole, does it run all the way through the visible wing, and is there a partial hole in the inside face of the other wing we can only see from the outside?
If so, then I'm wondering whether this might be some form of "limit" cap that might have fit on the end of a rod the had a hole drilled in it near the end. The hole in the rod would then be lined up with the cross hole in the "wings" and a pin inserted in order to tie off the end of the rod. That type of thing is sometimes done instead of using threads in order to attach a cap at a fixed position or distance, or an adjusting cap if the rod had multiple holes drilled in it.
It could serve roughly the same purpose as a collar and thumbscrew type adjuster.[:)]0 -
i can see that as a possible answer. i can see how it would limit a nut. im trying of course to picture anything that dad had that would be painted green. the only thing he had green was a '58 ford dully dumper and a 55 metro-mite van.
