Opinions on Springfield NM M1A
I will finally have enough money to afford a M1A and if I get one I want to have a good one. Any Pros and Cons on the Springfield? I have 2 Garands already and want to step up to the M1A. A base model M1A is nice but I am leaning towards the NM. Any help is appreciated.

I look for published comparisons.
In my case, either rifle can outshoot me, so my question would be: "By how far do I want to miss him ??"

Both of mine are Springfields and work for me. For the cost vs performance they are hard to beat. You can get cheeper Norincos and do some GI upgrades to make them good shooters. This costs about the same as buying a Springfield. There are lots of custom/high end makers that will run you well over $2k. New Springfields run about $1500 new depending on options. You can pick up very nice used ones for the $1000 range.
Here are my 2. Both are "loaded" models, one is a 98' and the other a 99'.

I had friends tell me to get a fulton arms, and others telling me to get a springfield arm.
I went to the range, one guy had a m1a loaded, I like the way it shot. I ask him if he had heard of fulton, He gave me a number to a friend that had one. we made arrangements to meet in 3 weeks.
I got to shoot the fulton. no big surprises.
I ended up with a springfield Loaded.
to tell you I got to shoot the M1A on a rifle match team, I fell in love with it. I was looking forward to the day I could have my own.

What are you planning on hitting at 300 yards.
Bowling pins or bigger--- No scope needed( atleast thats with my rifle and my eyes[;)])
Golf balls--- Your going to need a scope[;)][:D]0 -
I have a SA that I acquired used then had a heavy barrel and stock put on it. I shot it for three years on the Navy rifle team as well as at Camp Perry in 93. It will still out shoot my abilities today. Get a Springfield NM, you won't regret it. 0 -
no need for the NM gun. Nm is for 300 PLUS...targets.
any M1a in any configuration will hit a man torso target at 100 to 300yds.
NM is for hitting a bulleye with same hole accuracy all the time.

like muscle cars with souped up options, all accessories are designed to work in unison.
putting one or two options on an M1A without putting ALL OF THEM on, will only reap so-so results and is a classic retail trap.
either you go all the way with a NM gun or you dont. standard grade will do the job if youre not going to need to be serious about your target.0 -

Getting a deluxe rifle you want because it looks nicer than a standard model is reason enough for me. And he might find a nice 700-800 yard range down the road.

Yes I would be fine with the standard model, but Ill have the money to get the NM and I will probably be shooting longer distances further down the road 0 -

putting NM sights on an M1A and charging 500.00 more doesnt make it a NM. thats my point. can any of you list what makes a NM a NM without reading it off some sales ad?
and thats not an opinion, thats fact.
case in point, i use to shoot 600yd matches with a rack grade M14, and shot in the mid 400's using 173gr special ball. a rack grade gun at 100 yds wont need all the trim that a NM has to shoot nice. even at 300yds.
but hey...if the customer wants to think he's getting a deal, let the retail bug bite and let him go away happy and with a false sense of pride in ownership.
to my potential buyer...with the right ammo, a rack grade gun will out perform a NM with poor ammo at 100 to 300yds....if you know what youre doing. if you dont know what youre doing, neither one will matter. get the standard grade, take the saved money and buy supporting accessories to help you shoot (jacket/glove/dope book/wind chart) and some ammo.
when you start to see an improvement in your groups and they tighten up,(which isnt the gun thats improving, its you,) and think youre ready for 600yd matches, sell it and get a REAL HANDMADE NM and spare nothing.
why wear out a true NM for beginning? by the time you realize what youre doing right or wrong, your NM will be worn out with no record of shots fired and what it did.[;)]
learn how to fall and give it the gas on a mini-bike around a backyard dirt track, then get the husky 600 Mx'er and go to baja.
when you make leap into the NM arena, you dont just stick your foot in, you leap in over your head. you best know how to swim.0 -
I bought a Springfield for 350. Turned out to be a 7.62 NATO with a barrel made by Arlington Armory? whoever the hell that is. Now I have yet another rifle that sits waiting for someone to love. Ain' gonna be me, an M1 is 'sposed to be an '06.[:(!]

IMHO a NM is not just a Springfield with parts added at the factory for Big Bucks but rather a rifle that has a military armor build a gun with all parts fitted . All the early Springfield pistols made by the current company "No relation to the late great US GOVERNMENT SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" had NM as part of their serial number this did not make them a NATIONAL MATCH pistol I see the same thing in all their FACTORY high dollar pistols and rifles. I agree with BOBSKI he knows from what he speaks. 0 -
