I think the answer it different for every person....Some cant get another one for months or even years while others get another almost immediately...They cannot imagine their life without a pet there to love, talk to and be their closest friend ...That is all good...
Some feel guilty about getting another animal,..they think they are trying to replace the one they had...Nothing could be further from the truth...You cannot replace one animal with another...each one holds a special place in our hearts, each one has their own little tricks, their own mannerisms, their quirks and queeks if you will...
Each one loved and gives love back...Isnt that really what its all about?...
I urge you to think of the many puppies in the shelters if you are going to get another one...They need love so much and Don, I know from seeing the pics of Barney, you have a lot of love to give...0 -
Blackroses,You are so right,when i lost my lil.buddy oscar on 10-13-06 i figgured on never being able to replace her,on 4- 07 [exact date fails me] i got another lil buddy.dont replace oscar #1 because she ,like children are all different.But it does fill a void left by the passin of my partner of 16 years nicely.happly can say she all hose broken nowand like the 1st one goes everywhere i do.So dongizmo go with your heart and great luck.Thanks,Paul 0 -

I have been through this before,........I would say 3 to 6 months.
Remember your "best boy" for awhile, so when you get a new one, you will not compare as much. Dogs are like people, they have their own personality.
DO get another though,........just my advice.0 -
Im sorry to hear about Barney.. Even I liked that dog.
I wouldnt wait long, had to put my rabbit down and it still kills me, but dad wont let me have another one of those0 -

Marc gave some good advice. We had to put both our dogs down within six months of each other. That was just before we had our daughter. It's weird to have so much joy running around the house and still miss the hounds.
Only you will know when it's time, but you should give yourself time to enjoy the memories.0 -

I think its good to wait a while. I have in the recient passed had to put my best friend down,she was 11 and I miss her every day.
Im going to wait till Im old enough to out live the next dog, just cant imagine having to bury another one. This is the longest spell we have ever gone without a dog in the house, kind of lonely, not as secure,and missing the devoted love.

everyone is different, i myself would wait a bit, kinda like dating on the rebound, you get a attachment that you normally wouldn't, there was a comedian that said, "when you buy a pet, you buy a future heartache", i have found this to hold true, so i have always put a little space in between, nothing like buying a new pet that reminds you constantly of the old one, and i have even caught myself more than once calling the new one by the others name, thats starts the feelings all over again 0 -

Our cat died just over a year ago.She was my sons first pet and was family as far as we`re concerned.We haven`t replaced her yet,although we have had several offers for a new "special" kitten. The wife and kid aren`t ready for another. Besides,we still have Ralph and he now enjoys being number one.I`d give it some time before getting another. Only you will know when it`s time. 0 -
My wife saw Ceasar, a min-Pin of the best type born and took him home 5 weeeks later. He was killed at 13. Her childern purchased a 6 week old Min Pin THAT VERY DAY.
It was the best idea ever to help my Wife.
Love never goes away after a death, it grows more room for more love. That is a gift from God above fer sure.

I wouldn't feel pressed to get another pup but I would keep my eyes and ears open and when I found that special pup I wasn't really looking for, I would buy it.

When I showed the picture of your friend to my wife she wept openly- as only a true dog lover can.

hauling them down to the beach for bonfires and picnics.

...Immediately! the new pup will bring you much joy VERY quick and helps put "quick" time between you and your grief, I know. I resisted for 3-4 years and once I got my Border Collie I kicked myself in the azz for not gettin her a LOT sooner...[;)] 0 -
I want to thank everybody for the kind words and advice.
My wife was against getting a dog, I had to "sneak" Barney in, literaly in the dead of night, she was mad for a couple days, but this mug won her heart
What my wife did not know was I had been looking for a dog for over a year, craigslist, petfinder classifieds, bulletin boards, newspapers, you name it, I had done some reserch, I wanted a dog who's dander was least likley to affect my wifes "allergies" so I narrowed my search down to a beagle mix, or a poodle mix, something that could be a "lap" dog, but not a "toy" and I was not keen on paying a "rescue" big $$ for a dog, so I searched in stealth. I found Barney at petfinder.com, the woman who had him had purchased him as a "companion" for her 8 mo baby, only to find out the baby was allergic to Barney. (or maybe she realized a pup and a 8 mo were a little to much?)
I went over and met Barney, he was about 12 weeks old he came up to me, sniffed me jumped a bit, then laid down under the table.
at that moment, I knew he would melt the wifes heart, and he did.
I think this is the same approach I will take, and hopefuly, I can find another "best boy".

Trader Paper works for me. I always thought a beagle would make a good companion for a blue heeler, and possibly a good mix.0 -
