Unique ID number from ATF?

I just learned today that one can avoid NICS hassles by applying to the ATF for a unique ID number.

Does anyone have any information on this or considered it to be a good idea?

    You still need to go through NICS, they just keep you in file.[}:)]

    No need for it for me. In SC with a CWP they do not call you in anyway.

    UPINs are for people who get denied without anything on their record to warrant not being able to buy a gun. Unique Personal Identity Numbers are given if you go through the appeals process.....but I have never had anyone get one without first getting denied. The number takes about three months to get. If you get a UPIN it just means that the ATF will not instantly give you a "deny" when you do a 4473 because of some guy with a close SSN to yours who happens to be a fellon.

    The UPIN doesn't mean you won't still get a delay.....I have seen that still happen with people who have UPINs.

    I have been delayed every time since the NICS system went into place. No one has commented on whether seeking a UPIN is a good idea or not.

    Back before NICS, Indiana law required a 7 calendar day waiting period on handgun purchases. This waiting period was waived for those who held handgun permits.

    Yes I did, it is your choice to allow the FBI to keep a file on you.
    If you think that is a good idea, go for it.
