Need some advice (found one, update)

Tori and I have been missing the Miata since we've gotten rid of it. We miss the open air feeling and are thinking about building a beater truck and cutting the top off. Just some POS to drive around town without a top and not worry about getting dirty and scratched.

Something like a K5 Blazer or Ford Bronco. We went around last night to all those crappy car lots around town. We're looking for a total beater. If you have any ideas...let me know. She doesn't want a jeep(for some reason), although I think they are great as far as cost effeciency and parts availability, maybe I'll convince her.

Any other vehiles that are plentiful, offering parts that are easy to come by and will fit this bill? We're wanting a 4WD.

Found one, it's only 4WD, but is in great shape and looks like a steal.

    Some dune buggies are reasonably priced, will give that open air

    My old neighbor has a 79 Bronco that he's not using. I think he was asking $2000 for it last time I talked to him.

    A few months earlier and it could have been yours. I sold a 79 Bronco with a 460 in need of some body work for $650. I have always like the Broncos, had a 92 and 79. Just unbolt the top and off you go with a nice breeze. They also have convertible tops you can put on them for about $1000.

    good yr of bronco,dana 44 axle ft,9 in rear if it was a 4sp t18 very strong running gear but.....only the back of the top comes off same w/a k-5 blazer unless its older than 75 model..go for the jeep she can be persuaded im sure,you can always add a full cage rollbar,is she worried about rollover rumors? w jeep. they only roll over if you drive them aggresivly or like a miata lol[:D]

    How about one of those 1973-up Blazers that have removable back half of the top? They're cheap, 4WD and would give you some breeze.

    That's the K5 I was talking about.

    She doesn't want a Jeep because "Everyone else has one."

    I thought about a sandrail(dunebuggy) a while ago. Maybe I'll look around.

    Actually sandrail is a pretty good way to go. I built/had
    one that I put several hiway/town miles on, and had a blast with
    offroad.

    Why? We're not looking for something to take offroading. We just want a midsize truck/suv to cut the top of off and tool around in.

    it would fall apart if you cut the top off unless you weld crossmembers from side to side plus 2wd, ie keep looking, how about a 86 suburban on 38in tires[:p]

    Older Dodge Ramcharger or Plymouth Trailblazer. The tops come clear off - even over the passenger compartment. Loved mine, sold it to SonDave, and may be getting it back to put a built 440 in it.

    I like the '93 Blazer Cubs. But I think I see a small dent and a scratch above the drivers side head light.

    Forget the crappy toys, put the money you will spend on it (purchase, insurance, plates, modifications, repairs etc) in a CD/savings account. In 5 years roll the money you've saved by not buying it into a mutual fund.
    In another 30 years you'll thank me, as you sit on a carribian beach THAT YOU OWN.
