Question for Enfield shooters

I picked up a .303 Enfield and finally took it out to the range. I was using surplus ammo with head stamp of POF. After I pulled the trigger there seemed to be a hesitation before the round went off. I felt like I was shooting a muzzle loader. I am guessing it is the ammo I was using and will try to find a different kind at the next gun show. Has anyone else had this happen to them????

    POF is Pakistani or Indian ammo... could be the ammo, or it could be grease in the action slowing the firing pin, etc. Give the rifle a good cleaning and degreasing (and then relube) and see if that does it...

    Mine has no hesitation. As was stated above try different ammo and give it a good degreasing.

    It's the ammo. Have had it happen several times with different milsurp .303. It's all dependant on how the ammo was stored over the years.

    You guys ever hear of a "hang-fire"? ...Normally the problem is the ammo. Primer sputters and delays ignition of the powder. You NEED to review "immediate action response" for this condition! Basically keeping the barrel pointed up and down range for 1 minute, and before you open the action to remove round ...as I recall. Good Luck!

    I would say the hesitation was something like a half to a full second. All rounds went off, but they seemed to skip a beat.

    Will try some different ammo. Thanks.

    POF is Pakistani. Click....Bang and is notorious for this.

    The SMLE has a slow lock by design, but what you are experiencing is a hang fire which is the ammo's fault.

    Is it possible that ammo is loaded with cordite? Alot of .303s were and it is known to hang-fire. If you can pull a round apart the cordite looks like red pieces of pencil lead,not small grains of powder.

    Ammo. I've shot ammo marked GB1944 Mk VII, hundreds of rounds, and never had a misfire or hangfire. Not sure if you can get your hands on any more of that stuff, but it worked well. I shoot handloads and Federal Classic in mine so I don't have to flush out the corrosive primers.

    I've read numerous accounts of problems with the POF ammo. I'd stop using it if I were you.
    Good .303 milsurp is not as common as it used to be, but there is good commercial ammo out there that will work great in your rifle. I believe Wolf makes .303 now. Look around, you'll find some.
    The Enfield was a great old battle rifle. Feed her good ammo and you'll really enjoy how well they shoot.
