Do you feel quilty leaving your pet at home?
I do. I often think about the house catching on fire and there's no way he (Miniature Schnauzer) could save himself and knowing how excited he is when you return.
When you leave your home for a period of time, do you think about the safety of your pet(s) while you're gone and feel, somewhat, guilty for leaving them?

I used to have a german shepard. I felt badly about leaving him for more than 10 hours at a time. 0 -
yes. especially if the animal is DEPENDANT upon you for the basic needs.
i always have a neighbor go in and feed it or just pet it daily.0 -
I leave the cats for 2 nights frequently. Lots of food and extra water. They can watch the bird feeders and survivor squirrels for entertainment. Usually they are in the exact same place that I left them when I return. If I'm going to be gone longer than 2 nights, I have someone check in on them. 0 -
We've cut a couple vacations short just to come back and see our dog. Even though my father in law stayed at the house while we were gone. 0 -
When I leave the house I put my youngest daughter's Siberian Husky out in the backyard with the gates left wide open but that four-legged free loader is always there when I return home. I really hate that mutt. 0 -
yea i dont like to be gone more than 4-5 hours cause in cold weather the pups jack russell/beagle mix are in the basement[heated]and they are housebroke i know they would rather go.... outside but in summer they have a kennel thats 20x16 not big but shaded and safe from coyotes,we have taken them with us to outer banks last summer they were good in the jeep and loved the beach and we rented a dog approved house it even had a fenced in yard for running room but like you say i too feel guilty about them being locked up and no way to escape in case of fire etc.[:D] 0 -
Who could leave these babies? Only for a little while, but not before teaching BOTH of them to dial 911 and flush the toilet.0 -
We board our dog when going on vacation. We call it sending her to puppy jail. It's hard leaving her there, my wife refuses to drop her off. She is sooo happy to see us when we get her back. although she does forget she is housetrained for a couple of days. Or maybe she is just getting even with us. 0 -
Our Malemute-Wolf enjoys the house and seems to prefer to stay home than to go with us. He considers going to a kennel to be the equivalent of going to jail, so if we are going on a trip and he isn't going with us, we make arrangements for one of the few people that he likes to drop by a few times per day for feeding and time in the yard.
On those occasions when he has gone on trips with us, on the return, particularly when we get into familiar terrain, he gets quite excited, and when we pull into the driveway, he really goes ballistic. Once out of the car he runs a perimeter check on the yard and after chasing away any uninvited guests, he sets up a guard post in the living room where he can observe any violators.
No I don't feel guilty about leaving him where he likes most to be.0 -
...Well, guess I'm in a minority here. Mine lives outside 24/7. He has a dog door into the shed, where there is a box with 2" foam insulation and a cedar bed. Still, he sleeps in the snow and ice half the time. His heated water bowl and pan of dry food will carry him for the better part of a week. He won't leave the property or go onto the road.
...He's not much of a watchdog....in fact, if he could talk, he'd probably give a burglar the combination to the safes.0 -

Our current pet "Critter" is a very social Lovebird who wants to be involved in anything we do and eat almost everything we eat.
When we leave him for a day, he pouts. Fortunately we have some friends who enjoy his company when we go away.
I feel guilty leaving him out on the screened porch because I know he'd rather be snoozing in my pocket or desk drawer or walking across the keyboard for me to tease him.0 -
We don't leave our dog alone
for more than 3 hours,it's pathetic

We are rarely gone more than 3-4 hours, but if we are gone over night the dog goes with us. We have neighbors stop by and feed cats. 0 -
My wife leaves her cat at the apartment every weekend in Birmingham while we drive back home to our house in Atlanta for two nights. I think the cat thinks it's his apartment anyway and only allows us to stay there during the week.
She leaves him plenty of water and enought food for what looks like a year. He barely acknowleges us when we come back. Sorta like he's thinking "well hell, it's you all again! I wish these people would get their own place and leave me alone!" [:D]

If I'm gone overnight, I leave the TV on for them and usually a couple of new toys. I always secure the alcohol, guns and matches/lighters so there's no funny business.
I still worry that they surf for dog porn though.... [:p]0
