Freezer question.
I am in the market for an upright freezer. Somewhere around 13-14 cu ft. I will be buying from Sears probably since I have a 10% off coupon.
My question is what is the main difference of manual defrost and auto defrost. On some models this makes a large price difference.
For me the freezer would not be opened often, 1-2 times a week. Will it really need to be defrosted regularly?

You do not want a manual defrost freezer...Had an upright that I had to defrost every so often....
I HATED THE FLIPPIN THING....I got a frost free one very soon after literally chucking the manual defrost one...the manual defrost is just that...you take the ice off, you defrost it etc, and yes the ice builds up even though it is not opened much...
An upright is great...no need to dig to the bottom, but it seems there was a lot of "lost" space...it just didnt seem to hold as much as a chest type even though it was the same cubic feet...0 -
We have an upright that we bought several years ago, if, WHEN, we buy another one it will be a chest. You don't lose all your cold when you open it and yes I think in a chest you can get more in it. Stuff always wants to slide off the shelve of an upright. 0 -
An upright is not near as energy efficient as a chest freezer and will not keep food as long in a power outage. Cold air settles and as soon as you open the door on an upright, the cold air drops right out of it. I'll stick to my chest freezer. 0 -
Manual-defrost refrigerators use half the energy of automatic defrost models but must be defrosted periodically to remain energy efficient. Frost buildup increases the amount of energy needed to keep the motor running. 0 -

Main difference that I have found is, A manual defrost will build frost/ice up on everything and can become very thick along the walls in a short period of time. To defrost them can be a pain. Everything must come out and then the door left open long enough to defrost. The process can be sped up by using such items as an electric box fan, hair dyer, heat gun, propane torch etc. You never want to take something like an ice pick or screw driver and chip the build up off of the freezer walls. For they can be damaged easily in the process.
An Auto does not build frost/ice as quickly and may need to be defrosted once a year manually. Which a good once a year cleaning does not hurt a freezer any way.
The biggest two advantages I think in Uprights over Chest type. The ease to get at what you want and the space they save.

My advice dont buy sears.Seven years ago moved into a another house purchased all new appliances from sears,all have broken down and are gone.The only thing I have left that is a sears product is a chest freezer that is only six years old and that is packing up.Dont go into sears for anything any more.When my wifes father died 3 years ago in his house he had a fridge and a seperat freezer he had purchased in 1959and they were still working.There products have changed. 0 -
I'd buy used from the "thrifty nickle" or your local paper. You can find some good deals on freezers there. 0 -
Thanks guys. The main reason for upright over chest is available space. I can fit an upright 28" wide into the space I have but don't have anywhere available except in the middle of the kitchen for a chest.
I am definitely going to get an auto-defrost model then.
I'm gonna check the only other place I know of that sells appliances but will probably have to get a Kenmore because that is mainly all I have available.0 -
Check into a frost free model if you are going to look at the auto defrost...
They should be pretty close in price and if you shop around, it could even be a bit cheaper....ITs a heck of a lot better than having to defrost one, even if its only once or twice a year...

To each his own. I was quite happy to let the delivery guy haul my old Frigidaire away after he delivered the new Kitchenaid.
FWIW, we use a small chest freezer, made by GE. It has to be defrosted, maybe every two-three years. Not a big deal. My old freezer needed defrosting when I got rid of it, but it had been about 9 years.
The worst thing about a chest freezer is that the top is a good height to set stuff on, and if you do, you have to move the stuff to open the freezer. The bigger ones take up more floor space than an upright, but at least you don't dump all your cold air out every time you open it.0 -
I have the biggesr chest monkey wards ever made, made sometime in the mid 60's, I have had it for 20 years, I got it free off a ad on a church bulletin board, another fella called they guy who had it, and told him he wanted $50.00 to move it out of the guys basement, I moved it for free[:D] I have had to defrost it 2 times in the 20 years I have had it, and it has never given me a problem[:D]
I tell the wife if she does not behave, the kids will find her in there.......[}:)]
