Israel had too much at stake to permit any witness to the procedings.
The blame must fall on the CIA or whichever agency knowingly placed our men at such great risk in the middle of the action without armed support.
It was no news to many that the attack was intentional at the time.0 -
It was actually a Muslim ship flying an Israeli flag in order to confuse us. The Liberty attack got swept under the rug just like the attack on the Stark, by our good friend Saddam in Iraq. Say, has anyone heard from Saddam lately? He was always so friendly to us and a true stabilizing force in the Middle East. 0 -
Senator Harry Reid today confirmed that Pres. Bush was at fault.[V] 0 -

I'm not sure if you are kidding or what. The attack on the USS Stark was an unfortunate error on the part of the pilots. Saddam issued a public apology and paid for the damage. He also offered cash to the families of the deceased, but I don't remember if the Navy allowed them to accept it.
Actually Saddam was a stabilizing force for our side. He killed Iranians by the truckload after impotent Jimmy Carter backstabbed the Shah and allowed the Ayatolla Assihola Komenni (sp) to assume power.0 -

That is usually my intention around here [:)]0 -
This is a lot like the USS Pueblo. They send us out to snoop and don't give us any backup. I was not on the Pueblo but have been on the USS Arnold off the Russian coast. Had they decided to have a go at us, there was no one around for assistance. Tom 0 -

Not trying to be a smart-azz...just correcting your statement.
From the article: An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, Mark Regev, called the attack on the Liberty "a tragic and terrible accident, a case of mistaken identity, for which Israel has officially apologized." Israel also paid reparations of $6.7 million to the injured survivors and the families of those killed in the attack, and another $6 million for the loss of the Liberty itself.0 -

No correction needed. Two separate incidents. USS LIBERTY/USS STARK. Read the post throughly.0 -
I recently watched a program on Discovery Channel about the USS Cole. If anything makes one want to nuke the heathen Arab pukes, that does. 0 -
I was stationed [Portsmouth Naval Hosp.] with the Liberty's senior medical officer. Then Lt. Kiepfer. Happy, care-free guy.
He came back somber, moody, difficult to talk to. Combat is a life-changing experience. I had to see it in someone else to understand how it may have affected me as well. Best, Joe0 -

The combat endured by Liberty would have been especially hard to deal with, to watch your buddies get deliberately machine gunned by a supposed ally. Israel is still lying to this day about the incident.
Israel paid reparations? Great, I bet it was U.S. dollars, since we give Israel 3 billion dollars a year.0 -
Thanks for the details. Best, Joe 0 -

No problem. The STARK was hit by two Exocet missles fired at a radar target thought to be an Iranian vessel. The Iraqi jets didn't have a visual on the target. The shipboard CAWS was not on automatic and this incident caused a revamping of SOP in hostile waters.0
