Way too many of you guys talk out of both sides of your mouths. Bombing Dresden, nuking enemies, biological warfare, torturing prisoners, shooting prisoners, etc., etc., is fine as long as your side is doing it to someone else.

Boy, do you whine when someone else does it. Maybe that's why we are losing to the terrorist. They cut off a head, we need to cut off ten. When fighting to survive you use whatever you can to kill the enemy. Something our great leaders seem to forget when it's not their kids doing the fighting and dying.

Don't disparage an enemy (or former enemy) because they have the will to win. Admire them for a quality that our side seems to lack.

Dave, what unspeakable act would you tell Travis to never commit, knowing it would mean he doesn't come home if he didn't do it?
I dare say there are no unspeakable acts if a parent can get their child back alive.

WWII is over boys. We won. If you don't yet realize it, then you're a loser.

p3skyking, you are an intelligent man capable of logical thought. Think about what you just posted. I think you know and understand the difference between the destruction of an enemy and an atrocity. Why do you pretend you don't?

Under what circumstances would you have to commit an atrocity to survive? Maybe your definition of atrocity is different from mine.

    Jim,
I would have used poison gas in the Afgansistan hill caves to kill Osama after 9/11.
I would blow the hell out of any mosque, hospital, orphanage, nuthouse, or school that terrorist would hide behind and shoot from.
If starving, I would eat the heart out of an enemy if it kept me in the fight.
I stand by what I posted too. All the intelligence and good manners in the world count for naught if you are made extinct by an enemy. His vision of the world now dominates your people.

War is not pretty. I actually have come to despise it in my golden years. Enough so that I take the romance out of it and make it as horrible an endeavor as possible so people fall out of love with it.

When the civilized people (the ones that have never been cold or hungry) mull over it, never let them forget we still have fur, fangs and claws for a reason.

If this terrible reality offends some... Tough.[:(]

I don't see much to disagree with there. Still, winning a war and committing atrocities are two different things. Actually, winning a war as quickly and efficiently as possible is the most humane way to do it. Our main problem in Iraq is that we followed the Vietnam model. McNamara lives.

well said, p3skyking. I'd like to add that the "rape of nanking" thing does stand out as an atrocity -unlike- the other stuff that got this thread going in the first place, in that it was large scale and obviously unchecked. I think that shows that the japanese can indeed do some disgusting things. but the rest of it, eating livers, chopping heads off, etc etc is nothing new and doesn't show them to be any more atrocious than the rest of us.

it's all happened before. it goes on right now. you don't have to be a soldier in a war to do unspeakable things. read the paper. I don't even want to say what happened not too long ago it's so disgusting. just read about what people do to each other sometimes.

Exactly. I have some propaganda pulps printed after Pearl Harbor. One is called "Japanese Bloodlust". It is clearly meant to incite revenge atrocity with stories and pictues of Nanking.
Even Hollywood gave the okay to commit atrocities. There is a movie (I forget the name) with Humphry Bogart on a ship. A Luftwaffe aircraft that had attempted to bomb the ship was shot down with the airmen clinging to the floating wing. Bogey aims his machine gun at the survivors and without regard for the Geneva Convention, blows them all away.
How many soldiers and sailors justified their actions by that?

Who has forgotten Ma Lai? Everyone commits atrocity in war. It is the nature of the beast.

Funny how the Jap haters are now all silent. I can imagine the mind games they are playing with themselves trying to justify their wrong headed opinions.

So parents, what atrocity is too great for your child to commit to save his own life in war? As actor Jack Nicholson so eloquently put "You can't handle the truth!" so we sometimes ignore it.

You're really not making any sense at all.

The revulsion so many feel towards the Japanese for their conduct in World War II is by any reasonable standard quite deserved. The Japanese waged a war of aggression and did so in a horrific manner. Quite often their atrocities were committed against non-combatants. Japanese armies raped and tortured their way across the Pacific, and even today in some ways they refuse to admit what they did, much less apologize for it.

Do I admire them for that? Why in the name of God would I? Why would I admire someone for torturing a captive or for killing a child for the sheer joy of it? Can you explain that to me?

And does the fact that Americans have committed atrocities in any way lessen the vileness of the acts committed by the Japanese? No, not at all. Sin is sin. Crimes against humanity are crimes against humanity. And are you really saying the conduct of the American armed forces in World War II is comparable to that of the Japanese? That is a simply astonishing claim. And while he fighting certainly was vicious in the Pacific theater, that was mostly because of the conduct of the Japanese. Because the Japanese would respect no law of war, the Americans fighting them often had to ignore it as well.

And are you really serious when you write that you're impressed by how dirty they fought? You admire that? What the hell is wrong with you? When your son was playing pee-wee football did you tell him to go out and try to injure the other players? Did you encourage your daughter to cheat in school because it might lead to an A?

Even in war decent nations try to hold to standards: trying to avoid civilian casualities, accepting surrender, medical treatment and food for prisoners of war. The Japanese flouted about every one of those standards, and countless others. The fact that you admire that is simply astonishing to me.

In one case the atrocities were a crime. In the other case the atrocities were policy. There is a difference. Anybody old enough to post on the internet who doesn't understand the difference is beyond my explaining it.

    was it a 'policy'?

they probably don't want to apologize or acknowledge atrocities because the next step would be for them to make reparations. much like how the 'genocide' in sudan right now is being denied, because they (us, the UN) would be required to go do something about it. politics.

    Jim,
I'm sure the objects of the atrocity all recognize the finer points of the difference.

My study of WWII began in the late 50's sitting on the knees of uncles and father's friends who were there. I have devoted my life to the study of it. Not just the battles but the economic, political, idustrial, scientific, social, and historical aspects of it. Way much more than could be encapsulated in an internet thread or gathered from just watching Sands of Iwo Jima or The Longest Day.

    It appears you cannot decypher the core thrust of my post. So here's a couple of your questions I will answer directly that you should have been able to answer from my post;

And does the fact that Americans have committed atrocities in any way lessen the vileness of the acts committed by the Japanese? No, not at all. Sin is sin. Crimes against humanity are crimes against humanity.

No, the acts the Japs committed were extremely horrible.

And are you really saying the conduct of the American armed forces in World War II is comparable to that of the Japanese?

Everybody did atrocity. Tens of thousands of German civilians were killed in a horrific firestorm at Dresden. It was not a military target, it was a terror bombing.

Hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians died in the firebombing of Tokyo and the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To say they were atrocities is not to say that they should not have been done. They all aided in bringing the war to a conclusion. The Japs did the killing at close range, we did it from several thousand feet.

That's a ridiculous thing to say. The defenders at Omaha Beach on 6 June 1944 might not recognize the finer points of the difference either. What the hell difference does that make?

I don't doubt that you know as much history of World War Two as you say, but I am beginning to think you don't understand what you know.

If you call Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki atrocities, then your definition of atrocities is indeed different from mine.

So, it's not so much that there is nothing left to discuss, it's just that we don't have a common language to discuss it.

My Grandma is pushing 100... On her walls is museum to the American Soldier. At the center of that tribute is a picture of my Uncle Clyde Howe... He was killed in Italy by what can only be termed insurgents days after the war in Europe was offically over.. The Explosion was so great that neither his or any of his comrades bodies were recovered...
If you would drive up to her house in a Japanese or German she would more than likely scold you...If I drove up to her house in one of those same cars she'd probably put a bullet between my eyes. You see where I come from family never forgives the killing of family...and we don't much care for the killing of innocent strangers either...
Atrocities.... the Japanese should get down on their knees and thank God that Truman was the President and not Bertha Howe, because you'ld be able to find a Dodo Bird easier that you could find a Jap after she was done. What you call Atrocities she would call justice....

And we're supposed to believe that the children and grandchildren of these monsters have magically transformed into decent humans.

Beg to differ since I fall under the grand children catagory so by association I must be sub-human (at best right?).

The only reason why Germans, Vichy French (a.k.a. collaborators) and Italians of the Axis of the WW2 era are not demonized is because they are and can pass for "whites". It's easier to point out the black haired, slanty eyes and have better odds at guessing that they were on the opposing sides in some conflict (be it WW2, Korea, Viet Nam). While the WW2 era Europeans can drop a vowel in their last name, or put a spin on their pronunciation then change their first names to Bob or Dave and they're good as "good ol' boys"[:D]. Try doing that with a Japanese fellow of the same era and the first thing out of the collective mouths would be "who's this Tojo trying to kid"?

As with the medical atrocities of the Nazi's the "victors" divied that information up to further their own experimental programs. Even then wheeled and dealed for a good bargain for the good doctors of the Nazis. Got to love being able to trade for a better deal.

As for bear the liver answer. I believe they're after the "Gall Bladder" for the bile not the liver (even though it's in the same neck of the woods). Besides people eat bears in the States (musky in flavor is what I've been told). As for whales them Nordic fellows from Iceland snack on them. As well as Native Americans if the whiteman's laws allow them to for cultral ceremonies. Even then the tree hugging save the whales people interfear.

OK. So you take offense where none was intended. Your choice, I reckon. I still won't buy a Japanese car.

You may be right about the part of the animal, but what idiot would kill a huge creature, just to get the bile from the gall bladder. The little weiner syndrome will not be affected by it. That is only one example. Sharks being "finned", and left to die from lack of oxygen, so someone in the east can have sharkfin soup,........its crazy, just admit the black market exists, for the purpose of the Asian race!
Also no comment about children being sexual objects, and the degradation of females for the same purposes, and to keep them "servile".

Personally I don't care if you consider me as a monster (I just want to hear you own up to what you stated). For all I know, I am, it's just that I haven't been cornered or pushed far enough. Since every bloodline carries some sort of deed done to another for survival. If this wasn't true a lot of us wouldn't be here.

So no Jap cars, eh? Because of Pearl Harbor, Battle of Mid-Way? I'd be safe to say there will never be a Vietnamese cars on US roads so they're safe from Vietnam Bashing. Korean cars like Kia is nothing more than a Honda and Daewoo is along the lines of "they who"? (they did have cool inexpensive knock-off guns[:D]). Since the Jap cars are making the US play catch up in their own front yard is sad. It's nothing more than competition. Like not buying a particular car makes a differnece.

Any problem with German cars? I suppose we can over look their past with the "Easy Bake Ovens". Didn't Ford or Chevrolet have a tie in with Hitler? Maybe it was Ford with their maximizing the Assembly lines ala' Auschwitz (I should just Wiki-it but too lazy[:D]). We'll all be speaking Mandrin and getting "Re-Educated" on the evils of Western Culture (or their lack of).

Marc1301 - I think you're thinking "Rhino Horns" or "Tiger Bones" to make them go all night long. Ancient or Third World remedies does have something over Western Medicine but they can't compete with four hour erections. Like Viagra, Extends and other late night informercials pill pitches from Ron Jeremy. Americans making pills to help E.D. I suppose we could blame society for not having more attractive folks to get the blood rushing. Or looking at the wife and saying "Arrg, Left overs again"?

"but what idiot would kill a huge creature, just to get the bile from the gall bladder". don't forget the trophy hunters who just kills large animals for their skins or skulls.

Shark Fin Soup tastes good (it's more texture than flavor). If you follow the money you'll know it's Americans poaching bears (or hunting them leagally in season) for the "Asian Black Market" (a pawn to the mighty yellow-man's dollar). At least in China they caught on to the supply may run out (or get too expensive) so they put stints in to the bears to extract bile for years (Cleaver Chinamen's going to make some poachers jobless).

As for the child sex tours it's mainly for the European or whites market (since the locals can't afford to pay). The kids really don't have much of a future in those sweat shops turning out "Nike" for the American market. I suppose anything is better than a sweat shop. But I suppose it's their fault for supplying the demand from the tourists.

The keeping the women down is not just generalized in Asia. Just because woman sufferage movement back in 1920's allowed women to vote for the first time (only what 80 years or so back?). Remember United States is only 231 years old and before that all yalls were else where keeping the women down. Hell even the slaves had a vote (fraction but a vote none the less) before a woman could. Just look at your local streets where hookers hang out and their Pimp in his Caddy. Home grown oppression at it's finest.

But if you believe greed and evil only exists out side of the American Empire's borders you'll be amazed at what your neighbor is doing. I can almost hear "he seemed like such a nice guy". Before demonizing and damning a whole slanty eyed nations for the evils that white man does (or at least their money) look in your own neighborhood.

Yoshmyster,.......I am not trying to pick a fight. You are struggling to refute claims at this point.
I never said anything about Viagra,.......don't need it. Also it is a drug! It doesn't take the death of a Grizzly bear to get it. You are comparing apples to oranges. If you want shark fin soup,......slaughter the animal, so that it does not suffer,......if you are in your legal fishing waters! Tired of all the wandering Jap skippers, that claim they don't know where they were.
I also never said whom was doing most of the killing of endangered species,........I said where the "market" exists!
On the child front,.........I am not speaking about Vietnam, or Bangkok, where child prostitution for foreigners is rampant. I am speaking about the Japanese culture, where child porn, FOR Japanese, is accepted, as long as the "bad tidbits", are blurred out. Where did "Bukkake" come from, and what does it stand for. It did not come from the Western world, and I am sure you know the answers. It is a humiliation of a woman,...........just quit playing the games, and point out issues that are TRULY untrue. Why do the Japanese have such a fascination with schoolgirls in uniforms, and allow underage girls to pose for pics,.......once again, in Japan, as long as the right things are blurred out with filters.
Comparison of women in the USA to the Orient,.......don't even try me on that. I am talking about the modern world,......not many decades ago.

I have never owned a Japanese or German car and never will. If that offends anybody's sensibilities I can't even say I'm sorry with a straight face. Japan and Germany both did some unforgivable things during World War Two, but just as unforgivable to me at least, is the fact that both continue to deny and/or ignore that World War Two ever happened.

Most Japanese people of school age think Japan was an ally of the United States during World War Two, and are at a loss to understand why the United States dropped two atom bombs on them. That part of the war is taught.

German history in Germany is pretty much blank from 1939 until 1946.

As a side note, there is no shortage of young people in the United States who think Japan was an ally during World War Two.

Before you ask, Yes, I do buy products "Made in Japan" when I can't find a suitable substitute.

    [/quote]

I'm not picking a fight I'm just looking to clarify some (mis)information.

As for the Viagra bit it's a Western cure for impotence as rhino horns for that in Eastern Medicine. As for "Drug" or is it "Medicine" it's chemical (then again most of that is psychological).

A whole carcass of a shark takes up more room than just fins. Besides there is no real market for the flesh, however the cartilage of the shark is also valuable.

The lost Japanese skipper bit is funny[:D]. Or how fleets of ships marked identically to piss the Russians off while fishing in "their" so called waters[:D]. That's just politics besides most finned sharks happen in Mexican waters by you guessed it Beaners.

Black market exist because of a fast buck. If they stopped poaching then the market would have to figure out some other methods (like the stints in the bears). Instead of yapping about the black market and go after the poachers.

Since I don't know anything about "Bukkake" or blurred out Japanese Porn I'll take your word on that. As for humiliation for the woman bit I'll have to wonder. What's her price. I'll recon it's no different then the S&M "Fetish" thing that takes place behind closed doors in Anywheres-ville USA. Since people actually get off on some of that it's hard judge the whole so one will have to ask the individuals. Like most things in life you don't have to look.

I do like them college girls dressed in Catholic School Girl outfits[:D]. Then again I like the Stewardess out fits from when it was okay to call them Stewardess. Hell one of these days my girlfriend'll have to dress up like a nun with the habbit. I'd think it would be fun to get her sloshed.

I think Japan has a "modesty" rule or law where pubic hair has to be blurred (now I think of it). Still clueless on child porn in Japan but it can't be any worse than what it is anywhere.

Female oppression still exists here in the states as well as most parts of the world. Ex-Eastern block countries still have "white slavery". That can't be fun. Y'alls just seem to over look any faults in them thar white countries. But if it gets y'alls through the day to kick the Japs, keep the embers in hate alive. For I'll be the 6'3" Jap at a redneck bar asking where the white women at.

The Imperial Japanese military was brutal, and Japan deserved the 2 atomic bombs that were dropped on them. That being said, those A-bombs probably saved more Japanese lives than they took. A full scale invasion of the Japanese Home Islands would have been horrific for the US/Aliied forces that landed, but the Japanese civilians would have suffered even more.

But that is 60+ years ago. Japan has become a peaceful, productive member of the worlds most prosperous nations.

Funny, the Nazis killed more tha the Imperial Japanese, and the Stalinst USSR more than Hilter, yet no real mention of them were made here. Germany has reunited, and wishes to be another peaceful nation.

    Putin's Russia, that's a different story.

Okay Jim, now your talking. The French demanded harshness of the Treaty of Versallie (sp) set the stage for the reemergence of German militarism. The seeds of WWII were planted at the end of WWI.
On the other hand, our rebuilding of Germany and Japan via the Marshall Plan forstalled the hard feelings and hard times that had plagued Germany in the 20's. It also helped greatly that an American Caesar was put in charge of Great Nippon. He understood the Japanese psyche and made the transition to a peacetime economy.

How many can name that American Caesar without looking it up?
