AURORA - The City of Aurora is cracking down on "puffers" - vehicles left unattended during cold weather.


According to Aurora Police, during the past two years, almost 200 vehicles were stolen after being left running while the driver stepped away. Statistics provided by the department show these kinds of thefts were 4 percent higher in 2007 than the year before.

On Tuesday between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m., dozens of officers will be looking for drivers who leave their cars unattended as part of "Operation Unattended Receiver." The name refers to the fact that motorists who leave their vehicles unattended may receive a traffic ticket. Those who are ticketed for having an unattended motor vehicle on either private or pubic property can be fined between $75 and $105.
"We believe that every 'puffer' theft is preventable," said Sgt. Darin Parker. "By lowering the number of auto thefts, we also reduce other crimes such as ID theft, robberies and burglaries."

    Looking for drivers of unattended cars INSTEAD of looking for car thieves..... that makes no sense to me. Just what we need, another stupid law on the books.

    How much trouble is it to lock the doors while warming the engine? All it takes is two keys. I keep two keys to anything I drive.

    The way I read it, it doesn't matter if the car is locked.

    I'm just glad there's two and a half hours of highway between me and Denver.

    Maybe burglary could also be curtailed if AURORA POLICE went through neighborhoods rattling home doorknobs? If they find a door unlocked, they could confiscate all the beer or maybe a big screen TV. [:o)]







    In Colorado, stuff like finding Jon Benet's killer must take a backseat to real crimefighting [:0]

    With my RANGER and remote start
    I just,close and lock the doors
    then remote start, if anyone does
    get in as soon as they touch the
    brake pedal it kills the engine
    (that you have to do
    to take it out of park) then
    just open with the key on return.

    That's a nice feature to have on you vehicle, but if the law is the way Colonel Plink posted it and if you live in Aurora, you'll need to have an extra $75 to $105 a day if you use it.

    But you could not pay me enough to live in either Aurora or Denver.

    the cops WILL charge you here if you leave your vehicle unlocked or your window down a bit...and if it gets stolen you better have the keys with you to prove you didnt leave them in your car or the insurance company wont cover you...a good friend of mine has a good way of protecting his ...he leaves a sign on his dash saying...i am a herpatolagist..beware, snakes roam freely in this vehicle!...hasnt had any trouble from thieves yet!

    They could make a killing at Truckstops. But I doubt they'd go that far.
    Did you know that "Legally", a trucker who drinks (alcohol), either in his truck, or in a trucker honky tonk, COULD be charge w/DUI the second he inters in his running rig? Regardless of if he only intended to go to bed in his bunk. It has been done.
