Yeah, but a bic pen does not stop you from making simple clerical errors like writing 'Y' in a box instead of 'YES' that can cause you to have to defend yourself in front of an ATF review board. The software looks at whether a multiple gun purchase form is needed, whether any fields are empty or the answer would cause the sale to be disallowed, and fills in 'YES' and 'NO' and whatever the non-abbreviated answer is for each form field. You then feed the actual 4473 form into the printer and it prints your answers on the form, while saving a copy of the data into a database for later lookup.

It's neat stuff, and if it saves you from even a single clerical error you will be very happy you paid the $699 when you get audited. It's a huge time saver in that it screens the forms instead of you having to look, and double check, and have another employee look again.

If I read the website correctly, the ATF has not approved it yet.?.? I can see where this would really help a very busy gunshop that had multiple folks doing 4473's all day long...and the piece of mind might even be nice for the small shops...but that is some expensive software for the little guy to justify.

I was told to not help the customer fill out the 4473 in any way. This seems like a good way to get on the bad side of the local ATF folks around here. If you make one typo entering the info, you could find yourself in trouble for that.

I would rather the customer fill in the yes and no questions in their own handwriting that way they can't claim that I didn't enter what they said. I know they would still have to sign it, but I can see it still being a possible problem.

Maybe I am a bit paranoid??

+1, and handwriting can be evidence....
Now if the software scanned the form for errors, it might be worth something.

I don't think my local ATF would like me using it...they like to have the writen forms whenever things go wrong. It has only happened a few times (where a form has been acquired by the ATF for use in a trial.)

I like the idea for the "normal" customers...but I think a computerized form would be just as hard to get done by those that it is MOST difficult to get to do the written form correctly. The average person usually does the form with little or no problems...but the most troublesome costomers would still need all the help they could get just to translate the silly form.

I will save this link and think it over....and I thank you VERY much for the tip Admin!!!

When using the software, the customer fills in the form on the computer. In other words, you sit the customer down in front of a computer and the software takes them step by step through the same questions the 4473 asks. At the end of the questions, the software stops and the clerk takes over the final steps. When everything is correct, the software prints the customer's answers on an actual 4473 form (not a replica or copy, but a real 4473).

As SHOT Show these guys had an army of top ATF bigwigs swarming them. ATF is extremely interested in this software because it eliminates human error, not only in filling out the paperwork but in letting mistakes slip through.

I understand...but I cannot imagine what some of my guys (or gals) would do with a computer. The ones that I would get that program for are the everyday customers.....and my problem people would still have to be babysat while filling out the form.

During one of my inspections I was told by an agent of the ATF....NOT to translate the form into real words. I just don't get this way of thinking. WHY can't I translate....they DON'T understand what it is asking!!!!

    Are you the TRUE buyer....
    Are you under indictment....
Have you ever been convivcted of a FELONY...ever....
Are you wanted by the law for any reason....
    Are you mentally ill....
Do you beat you wife, kids or have restraining orders....
    Are you a citizen...
Are you a planning on being a citizen....
Are you planning to NEVER be a citizen....

Its just too confusing to understand for some. That is my main problem. I've started saving the really good ones. Its just rediculous what some end up looking like (but they don't get my guns.)

I always help each customer fill out the 4473 and then recheck it before I turn over a firearm........because it is my a$$ on the line I do a pretty good job at this. If I spent close to $700 on software and let the local Idiot fill out the form himself and on a puter at that I'd be in the hole so fast it is about to give me a heart attack just thinking about it. Besides the last two times I was "spot checked" the nice fellow from the BATF said everything looked fine.

I think OFFICAL approval by the BATFE is critical for this. I am taking a new job this fall as BATFE person for a 14 store chain and could see where this would be very benificial. The last audit 1 store had 44 violations.

So make a "check sheet" that you lay over the completed form, cut out where ever the customer answer should go, note on the cover what should be there, and what to do if its not. use a opaque document cover a razor blade and a sharpie, should cost less than a buck.

Bob has a point also, what about when BATFE changes the form, or good old Billy Gates needs a new space ship and all of a sudden your OS is not compatible any more?

Worth $699? Ask Sandy Abrams, former NRA director, former owner of the Valley Gun Shop in Baltimore, MD. This was the largest gun shop in the Baltimore area, selling thousands of guns a year.

I say "was", because he lost his license (& business) in 2007 because the fellas with the bulges in the cheap suits found too many "violations" in his records. Most of the violations were clerical, such as Y for Yes, or incorrect zip code, or similar customer errors.

No, you shouldn't coach customers, but you AND YOUR EMPLOYEES need to carefully edit every 4473. ATF doesn't approve software! All they care about is accuracy of your records. HOW you do that is up to you. Right now, I'll bet that Sandy wishes they had they software available a few years ago.

We are currently undergoing a pilot program issued by ATF to further test EZ4473 for a national application. At the conclusion ATF will confirm the use of the software for each state. There will not be a demo version of the software.
Please visit EZ4473.com for more news and announcments.

It says on the form, "Must Be Completed Personally By Transferee (Buyer)" Are you saying that the customer has to input their information on my computer.

Makes it very easy for the ATF to later require FFLs to link to the sofware through their mainframe as a "money saving service" and an error-free way to record every gun purchase nationwide in real time.
