The local little town had a volunteer limb/brush cleanup..Today. They wanted 200 people, 50 trailers to fan out and remove the debris from the ice storm last month.
Ok. I put 4x8 sheets of plywood on my 16 foot trailer for sides.and whizzed over there this morning. Took a friend along to drive. line at the door..7 A.M.
I eased up to the head of the line, and they were signing in..name,address,tele.
I asked the little fat chick if she wanted signatures or workers.she looked utterly shocked. First said that I HAD to sign in.and I told her..thanks. but I am outta here..me and my truck and trailer.
She asked me to wait.went and asked somebody else.and came back minus the demand for sign-up.
Sat around for an hour, as the sign-up continued.then came area assignments. The instant they announced that, I was up, moving to the front. I had asked if there was any little old ladies or infirm that needed limbs removed..said they didn't have that information.
Made 4 loads before 3 P.M. when the city shut down the dump.
While loading limbs, I had noticed a little blue car a time or two cruise by, looking.most all day, there were gawkers.
Just as I threw the last chunk into the trailer, little blue car drives up into the driveway and a fellow about 45 bails out.bustles over to the little fenced yard, and gets the two dogs out.then proceeds to stroll down the street, walking them.needed his exercise.
Those 4 loads, stacked as high as I dared to, all came out of his yard.
There is a pile of brush 10 feet high, 100 yards long, and 50 foot wide..all hauled today by citizens.
And we hardly made a dent in the piles of brush scattered in front of nearly every house in town.
I found out.again..that I ain't 30 no more. Sitting here quaffing a Jack & coke..trying to ignore things paining that I didn't know I had.

Community Service. A noble thought with a kick in the ass as the reward.
Those types of things, like the oft heard crys for help, well-intended offers for help, etc. are taken advantage of by those who least deserve it and who do a minimum or no actual work. If you sign up and you are a patsy for every work detail or donation drive, etc. that comes down the pike. That's why they wanted all that data on the patsies.
Typically, as you found out, those who need the help the most never get it. Praise and plaudits go to the unworthy.0
