Poisen IVY in January???
The only skin exposed yesterday while I was cutting wood was right below my glove. ITS WINTER! I thought ivy was a summer disease.

According to this site and a few others, you touch it in winter, you get it in winter....it knows no seasons....

I just about lit the whole pile of vines covering the tree. I wonder if the firewood could get contaminated with the poisen, or is it just dangerous to burn the vine??? I am using the firewood, but the bark and vine are off.0 -
You should be ok with the wood. I doubt enough of the oil could get on the wood to do anything. 0 -
God help you if you inhale poison ivy burning. it is not pleasant. the vine never dies, its like a tree, it just loses it leaves...but its still there. 0 -
Poison ivy is a very tenacious plant. It sends out runners which often allow it to emerge in a new location.
It's January. There's snow on the ground. How did I get this rash? Even in winter you may contract poison ivy from touching wood you use to burn in the fireplace. The wood may be long dead but the urushiol remains active for up to several years. What's more, burning the wood may actually carry the allergen to your skin or you may even inhale it with the smoke and ash. It has been known to cause respiratory distress. If this happens, see a physician immediately.

I did a search on the net a couple of years ago when I got a good case of it. I think I read that one drop of the oil is enough to infect over 2000 people.
Try a product called Zanfel-it works well but is about $40 for a 1 ounce tube.
Good thing is poison ivy is easily killed by common weed/grass killers. I sprayed a patch near my mailbox 2 years ago and another one this last year on the other side of the road. Both shriveled up after a few weeks. If you leave it, it will spread rather quickly.0 -
My brother and I were chopping some poison ivy vines one November, he got a hell of a case of it.
Fortunately, I am immune to poison ivy. If I am cutting poison ivy with a chainsaw, and some of the sap lands on my skin, I will get one little bump, but it won't spread.
My poor brother was in the hot shower scraping all those pustules with a butter knife. Boy he gets it bad.0 -
My doctor recommended steroids for my rash:
Steroids are known to have many long-lasting harmful side effects. In addition, they only suppress the symptoms (itching, rash, swelling). The irritant remains in your body and the rash often reappears long after the steroids have worn off.

This is no joke, corticosteriods have some nasty, permanent side effects. If the doc wants to treat poison ivy with this tell him "No thanks."0 -
You can get the itch 365 days a year.
When ever the plant is damaged the sap can get you.
Burn it and the smoke can kill you or make you very ill.0 -

Steroids are the standard of care for contact dermititis secondary to poison ivy. Steroids given for a short period of time are safe. Long term steroid use is not good. Your doctor should have given you a topical steroid as well as the oral. don't wash your cloths in the washer if they have the oil on them as it can stay in the washing machine and transfer to other cloths being washed.0 -

I got it a few years back cutting wood in winter.Just a few chips off vine is all it takes.We burned the wood with no problems but be careful handling it. 0 -

You need not be "dumb/stupid" to get poison ivy in winter.Since the leaves drop in the fall, like other leaves, it's unrecognizable from other vines.Thus making it easier to be exposed to in winter.Good luck,and don't spare the CALMAINE LOTION.!!!0 -

You can tell which vines are poison ivy, because they have long, hairlike tendrils on them.0 -

It is truly strange and unpredictable. I USED to be able to walk through it in shorts and a short sleeve shirt. I happened to cut through some, in the winter, while cutting fire wood in an orchard that was pushed over.
I went from no reaction upon exposure to it to having it everywhere but my eyes. Now I get mild cases of it while trying to be careful. Just because you haven't reacted to it before doesn't mean you won't get it the next time!!0 -
