Going to buy a Ruger SP-101 what do you guys think
Well I am going to call the gun shop today and have them order me a Ruger SP-101 .357. What do you guys think of this handgun, anybody with any personal exprecience with one. Most of the reviews I have read are on the positive side. I am just looking for an occasional carry and take in the truck, boat and anywhere else I might go gun.

I have a "few" SP101's and love them all. Overbuilt and rugged. Some will say they are still too heavy with a snubnose but when shooting .357 you don't want it too light. Would be a great choice for what you are going to use it for. 0 -

I had the flush [bobbed], 1.875" BBL model.

Very well built. The trigger may leave a little something to be desired and you could spend some money to improve it. But after that, you will have spent as much and still not have as good of a trigger as you can get with a SW 686. I'm not saying there is anything bad about the Ruger (they are nice) just handle as many 357's as you can before you buy.

I have 3 gun shops that I go to for different things, but the best price I got was 410.00 which was about 80 dollars cheaper then the other 2 shops I do business with. And 410.00 seemed like a fair price even comparing it to the new ones on gun broker.

Well built and tough. They are on the heavy side which is great for shooting but can be a drawback for carry. A set of Wolff springs will do wonders for the trigger pull. I have installed probably a dozen sets and they work great. I use the middle spring weight of the three supplied as I recall. Then function test it to make sure that they do not misfire. I have not had one not work yet. 0 -
I love all of my Rugers and was going to get an SP-101 for carry but I thought it was a bit too heavy to carry all day. I opted for a Colt Detective Special even though it's only a .38 Special. 0 -

If its a "sit in drawer a lot", and "carry and shoot a little" gun, the Ruger is the perfect gun for that application.
If its "shoot a lot" I'd go for the Smith 60. Just a smoother action out of the box, and a bit more refined gun overall.
If its "carry a lot", I'd prefer either the all stainless steel Smith 60, since its a bit smaller than the Ruger (and I think lighter), or better yet, one of the alloy frame Smiths in .38 or .357 for weight savings.
Having shot both, IMO the recoil from the all steel Smith 60 with full 158 grain .357 magnum rounds, is still LESS than the airweight alloy frame Smith with .38s! In fairness, its not just the weight difference; the stock full three-finger grip on the magnum gun soaks up recoil a lot more than the stock Smith boot grips. Regardless, firing the 60 with magnum rounds wasn't unpleasant.
Also, if you're in the market, its worth poking around for a used one. In keeping with the "in drawer a lot" principle, there are a lot of used snubnose revolvers sitting around out there that haven't had more than a few boxes of shells through them, so it really is possible to find one in like-new condition for a decent bit of savings over a new one.0 -

Cast metal or not, they seem to work and last just fine. Besides that, how do you think the billets of steel than S&W forge their guns comes from? That metal had to be processed also. In regards to the 10 round magazines, that was rumored to have been said by Bill Ruger in regards to rifle mags but he favored 15 round pistol mags. But regardless, Bill is dead and the Ruger company makes and markets to civilians good guns at a fair price. So if you want to stay mad at a dead man, go ahead. But sooner every gun maker out there will say or do something you don't like and pretty soon you will have a grudge against all of them.0 -

It was a letter sent by ruger to ALL U.S. Congressmen and Senators.
The letter was published in Shooting Times, and you should be able to check it in their archives, or through snopes.
It was 10 rounds for any civilian firearm - long or short.
Stay mad ??

Let me ask this question which concerns the Smith, I hear that the newer Smiths are not near the quality of the older ones. Is this true? And if I wanted a good smith I would have to get an older one?

There is nothing wrong with the new Smiths, other than the silly, politically correct key lock feature. If you can find a used model 60 or 640 for a good price, go for it. 0 -
Nothing wrong except the key-lock feature? Let's rephrase that. It's a built-in mechanical device (hence, prone to failure) with the purpose of causing the gun NOT TO FIRE. Guns already have built-in devices with the purpose of causing them not to fire. Do you want yet ANOTHER redundant system with the purpose of causing your gun not to function in a situation where it may be needed? Will you ever wonder if you forgot to unlock it the last time you put it away? That would be a crummy way to die.
People laugh. I don't because I had a Remington 597 with one of these features. I bought the gun, took the keys out of the box and tossed them in the glove compartment of my truck because I told myself I was NEVER going to lock the gun. After a few months of taking it out, shooting it and cleaning it I decided to go out to a favorite place of mine out in the country to shoot. I parked the truck, walked the target board out about 50 yards and went back to my home-made firing line. I loaded the gun and pulled the trigger. NOTHING. I had to walk all the way back to my truck, get the key, lock it and unlock it before I could fire it again. I had NEVER locked it before. I sold that gun and swore I'd never buy another gun with a built-in key-lock device--that includes the new Ruger single-action pistols.0 -

And Tauruses are not made in USA. I'm still gonna stick with Ruger and S&W. 0
