A First...Travis In A Suit
Sorry, but I have no pictures.
For Christmas, I took him to a mens' store and got him two suits, four dress shirts, four ties, two belts, and two pairs of shoes. The nicest clothes he had until then were Dockers and sport shirts.
He was a little put off, but I told him that a man needs a suit or two for special occasions, funerals, weddings, job interviews, etc.
Anyway, today I heard him rambling about the utility room for a long while, and checked on him. He was ironing one of his new shirts. He then put it on with a suit and tie. He looked like a million bucks! The only time he looked prettier was when he was in his dress greens.
The occasion? Job interview at L-3 Communications. I haven't heard how it went.

Good luck to him. We're interviewing for three instrument tech's at work right now. While the decision is not entirely made by me or the other supervisor, we carry a lot of weight. Qualifications being near equal, we will give extra consideration to former military, even though neither of us are such. Especially if they wear a suit to the interview. Personally, I'd wear a suit to an interview at Walmart. 0 -

You only have one chance to make a first impression and when I interview someone I am always interested in how the applicant is dressed. Friday casual is okay when you are actually working at the firm but for an interview I expect at least a shirt and tie, although suit would be better. Walk in in a pair of jeans and a pull-over and I don't care if you have a Master of Engineering degree from MIT or CalTech, you probably won't be a good fit around my office. Mr. Nunn, you did your boy a fine service by getting him some nice clothing and if you could post a photo of him I am sure that we will be impressed. If I recall travis is a slender well built young man so I have no doubt that he wears his suits very well. 0 -

as i stated there might be a place for a suit. you come wearing a suit to get a job in the oil fields or coal fields or most construction and you would be laughed at. i am not bashing NUNN for buying his son a suit[;)]0 -

I believe that is Integrated Systems Division over there. I have an aunt that lives near them on Jack Finney Blvd.
I was with another L-3 Division in CA when I retired and we did a lot of work with IS.0 -
Hey, how about dressing for the job you are appling for?? I don't really think a roughneck on an oil rig would apply wearing a tie? That dam thing will get you head ripped off.

Actually, wearing a suit to ALL job interviews is NOT a good strategy. You have to dress according to the place you are interviewing for, not above or below it.

Seems like only a few days ago he was trying to decide which branch of service to join. I guess this means he is either a civilian or about to be one now.

jwb, I agree about the oil field worker and coal miners. The job we do is blue collar. We work outside regardless of the weather, around chemical processes, 600# steam lines, acid lines, etc. 120' up on the side of extraction towers, coal-fired boilers and 45000 gallon tanks. We wear hard hats, flame retardant clothing, goggles, earplugs and steel toe boots. And not just because we have to. My guys are union across the shop. And they are professional. That's my point. If they can't look professional for an interview, how can we be sure they won't take a short cut, leave a wire loose, and run a solvent tank over and into the river? Or turn a breaker on while his buddy is connecting motor leads? I'm sure oil rig workers and coal miners have their own way of dealing with F-ups. We weed 'em out before they get a chance to F-up.
A suit is not a requirement for our interviews, but you better not have a stud in your tounge and a "F__ Authority" tee shirt on, either.0 -

I remeber when I interviewed for my first oilfield job. I had a nice pair of slacks and tie on. When they saw my size and that I could pick up about anything they needed I was hired on the spot and was out in the shop 15 minutes later in my slacks and button up shirt pressure washing offshore units, changing oil in power packs, breaking down running gear and generally destorying my "fancy" clothing with whatever dirty jobs they could find for that day. The manage though it was funny. [:D]
The oilfield is a completely different beast then most jobs. I love it! [:D]0 -
Oh, he is in school, too. Signed up for night classes so he can work in the daytime. He has a very independent attitude about it, and won't ask Pops for a nickel. He also wants to get an apartment, which I have counseled him against, but he is his own man now. 0 -

David, how is he supporting himself right now?/ What is he doing to keep body and soul together? Did he save that much money while in Iraq?
After I left home, I never asked nor received a dime. But I did pass some good opportunites up. Sometimes you never know until they are gone. Tom0 -

Nunn did the right thing buying that suit. It will help him in many ways -- there are some folks here that are against dressing up, but to each his own. I learned in the Army how to dress up or down and look sharper than anyone else in the process.0 -

when my mom died, I went down, got a suit
of course it was all black.
