Progressive can notify Geico for you to prevent any overlap in coverage. I switched from Geico to Progressive mainly because Progressive gave me a huge discount for my motorcycle insurance if I also insured my car with them.

Will Progressive do this automatically? Or did you request them to do this?

You all know that Geico and Progressive are related right? Progressive started off as Geico's high-risk alternative.

When I have switched I just told the old company that on xxx date, cancel my insurance. Maybe let that date be a day after your new insurance kicks in. Don't just let your current insurance run out - that way your current insurer will have to send you a check since you pay in advance.

Do NOT just let your insurance run out. Even if you have coverage with a new company, the old one will continue to harass you. I don't know what relationship GEICO and Progressive have, but I switched from State Farm to Allstate last year and State Farm continued to harass me for about 3 months, even though I informed them in person, over the phone, in writing, and by fax several times, beginning about a month prior to the date I changed over. I changed both my house and car insurance, effective the date of my move. What they seemed to have was a failure to communicate. Makes me kind of glad I switched before they had a failure to pay out a claim.

I could be way wrong, but have heard that both Geico and Progressive suck if you ever have a claim. They are cheap because they do not follow the traditional format of local reps. This means when you call with a claim, it goes to a cubicle a thousand miles away, not to a guy in your hometown.

I have also heard that the CEO of Progressive gives generously to ultra-liberal causes. Anyone else heard this? I know people who will have nothing to do with that company.

I own a body & repair business & work with these companies. They will use the cheapest parts availible, & try to squeeze the shops into doing it for less. I don't like working for them because trying to maintain a quality repair for what they want to pay I lose money. They have shops in their network that they direct the work to. I've looked into it but I would have to cut corners to make it viable. I would hesitae to insure with them for these reasons. They cost less but that's the reason. If you like doing business with your local shop they strongly pressure you to take it to their shop.Been on the back end of these deals & it's no fun.

We are with geico and when my truck was stolen and then wrecked a few yrs ago, I had no problems with them. We had a single claims officer to deal with they were prompt in dealing with us and the body shop, returned my calls right away. All in all I have been very pleased with the service we recieved both in that incident and when I was sideswiped by an uninsured driver a year later.[:D]

You will cause a real nightmare for yourself should you have overlapping policies. There exists a clause in every insurance policy about Additional Insurance. Essentially, both auto policies will state that they are secondary insurance and the other carrier is primary insurance.

So, if something happens, GEICO and Progressive will fight amongst each other as to who is primary and who is secondary. The right course of action is to split the difference among your policy limits...

    EXAMPLE:

    Progressive Policy: $100,000 liability
    GEICO Policy: $50,000 liability

What this means is that Progressive would be responsible for 2/3 of the damages and GEICO would be responsible for 1/3 of the damages. However, it will still be bad for you.

What I recommend is as follows:

    1. Start your Progressive policy at the time the GEICO policy ends; or

    2. Start the Progressive policy now and cancel your GEICO policy effective the effective date of the Progressive policy.

Do you know Progressive is run by the Left Winger Peter Lewis. He is sort of like George Soros. I'm sure the company values do not reflect the people here.

I checked Allstate and it was the most expensive.

What I have done is signed up with Progressive and it takes effect the day that Geico policy expires. 2/24/08.

I plan to just not pay the renewal bill with Geico. I will be covered by Progressive as they are already paid by CC and the paperwork is on its way. I should have insurance cards well before the coverage starts.

I have no coverage on my own vehicle, just on the other vehicle in the case of an accident. So it doesn't matter as much that they will try to cheap out my parts, since they aren't covered.

Geico was $187 for 6 months and Progressive is $93 for 6 months (actually the first 6, from then on $143). Some of the limits were lowered but some were raised. Basically equeal though.

We go though a local insurance broker and it has worked out well. my wife had an accident several years back, we called our local broker & did not have to make another call. They had a rental car delivered to my wife & covered the hospital bills right off the bat with nothing out of pocket. For the little extra that we may pay, it is well worth it.

ALLSTATE......are you f'n crazy. If I was in hell and allstate was giving out free ice water, I wouldn't take none.
allsnake completely screwed me during hurricane katrina to a tune of about $70,000. I had homeowners, flood, autos(2), boat, life policies on me, the wife and all 4 kids, 2 retirement plans, 1 for me and 1 for the wife. I was in the good hands.....right.
I hope allsnake and all of its employees who did mis-justices to katrina people rott in hell.
On the other hand, state farm did right by my mom and dad.
I currently have hartford for everything.

I was told by my insurance agent when I switched insurance companys to cancel the old policy. Otherwise it can affect your credit rating.

I saved $400. a year by switching to the Concord Group Insurance last fall. My son looked into Progressive on a used car he bought and their price was around $300. more than the insurance company he was with.

I go through a local broker and am covered by Pekin. I have gotten quotes from Progressive and Geico in the past a couple times, and my local guy always beat them on price. Plus it's nice to have a store front to walk into and speak to someone face to face when you actually need the insurance.

Progressive is owned by the anti-gun, democrat-liberal, anti-American lying POS by the name of George Soros. He's not getting my money.

I want to echo the sentiments of those who have tried to warn you, Progressive is into some very ugly stuff that is just plain unAmerican, much less just left winger. Please try to spend your money where you are not supporting things that are out to hurt you.

Go with Progressive, don't worry about all this hype you hear abour the anti-gun owner. Laurel owns Progressive. I've been using them for 5 years with no problems. My wife was rearended twice last November and Progressive stepped up and paid off the totaled car fully, even sent me a $1000 check for the deductible so I would'nt have to wait on the parties at fault to cough up the guilty dough.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but GEICO was created in the early 70's strictly for Government Employees, but now for the general public and they require a FICO score of 690 or higher..

Stands for GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES INSURANCE COMPANIES

While you may be treated well by progressive when your car needs repairs, the people on the other end of this doing the work aren't. Yes they will pick up your car for the repairs you don't realy know where it's being taken to. It could be 50 miles or more away getting repaired by some schmuck dumb enough to put up with their repair practices.
