I don't know how many people live in hoa run communities but for the last 18 months our's was a real joke.
thankfully we were able to have a great new years party with over 60% of our community. on 12/31/07 we served papers for the recall of the entire hoa board of directors . the current emperor , ah ,, president , was running the whole community with a pick and choose ,and, i have to get even with "them" , me against "them" type attitude. HE and they allowed virtually no community imput , the rest of the board just went to the called meetings and rubber stamped his pronoucments and rulings with no real imput. his take on how the community was run or overseen were the only ones entertained. they allowed selective enforcment of deed restrictions [cce&r's] A very strange bunch on that board. most of us have a hard time figuring out how we voted for any of them. finally the community got together hired a great legal firm that specializes in hoa's and then followed florida's state statutes to oust them by voting them out . the new board is made up of fair minded, common sense people ,without any personal agendas, and now we believe the good of all will be served. we just have to wait a short time for the offical acceptance or certification by the state ,next time , [if] , we ever move it will be to an area that has no hoa .     If it weren't for the fact it is -1 degrees outside, I would go take a leak out the back door just to pay tribute to living in the country.

    You should talk with your attorney and see if it is possible to vote the HOA out of existence. I doubt you would find many in the community that would be apposed to it.

    Home Owners Associations are set up to serve an important purpose, but they are only as effective as the people involved. Some really annoying types really enjoy the work, but that's the human race for ya. I put school boards and planning commissions in the same class -- depending on the caliber of people, they can either be effective or a pain in the drain.

    When I was looking to buy a house, and I found any HOAs or CC&Rs, I would run away from that property as fast as possible. I have never, in my entire life lived where anyone but the county building codes, could tell me what to do with my property.

    Your are a better man than I, as I could not tolerate any HOAs.

    Moved here from out of state in 1980. Became a first time homebuyer in a developement 6 miles from town because it was the most house for the money we had. Was not told of HOA by realtor or former owner. Was told by a member that I had no choice but to join since the original owners did. Neither of us had family to give advise. We thought "we'll be good neighbors and the cost is cheap" Well, next thing ya know we find out that the county won't do the roads so the dues go to the president who has a snowblower on the front of his pick-up and feels he doesn't need to tell anyone when he starts blowing snow and when he stops. Then we're assessed for a load of gravel every year. Then there was the hoaky Roberts Rules of Order meetings in various people's garages (
    what in hell does it take to embarass some people?)that were taped (my last loud, obscene rant is probably still in the minutes-"THIS is you people's idea of home ownership?!.....I bought so as to get out from underneath landlords and now I've got YOU to contend with!.....You all think you're sittin' on your own little Ponderosa out here (all lots were an acre!")...."we all might as well live in town!"
    My wife and I then powersaved, bought 4 acres with a house and paid paymentson both places for 7 months then continued powersaving and making double payments + while skimping and driving old cars and paid the 30 yr. loan off in 11 years to get out from under the suits and ties that have mortgages rigged against you. Now all I have to contend with is this damned zoned county with it's building permits (you're PUNISHED for making improvements).
    I have a brother who lives in a non-zoned county and every year or so the supervisors try to make it zoned and they're damned near tarred and feathered while they throw out the same old arguments about "how it'll be good for ya".
    You can bet I was there for my 3 grown daughters when they bought and they damned sure got educated about HOA's.

    There are enough restrictions placed on us by the government. I will not live anywhere, where my neighbor can tell me that I can't own a pickup, a motorcycle, or what color I can, or can not, paint my house.

    For the most part, HOA hos are folks who were too big a pu55y to get to be hall monitors in schools, got picked on and teased mercilessly, and are genetically predisposed to become, or endeavor to become, internet message board moderators.

    We just cleaned out our HOA board. We had a guy that was president of the board for 10 years and ran it like he was hitler.

    He seemed to relish in screwing with people. I went to a couple meetings and called him on several of his "factual" statements that were not factual.

    One of my neighbors is an Airline pilot, former F-18 Hornet jockey.... very nice and squared away guy. We ran a campaign for some new blood on the board. We not only got 4 of "our" new friendlier people on the board, but got the former "hitler" completely OFF the board.

    It was a great day for our neighborhood.

    we had a jerk like that who wanted to form such at the lake, of course with him in charge of putting in a dock for us to use....he had a meeting at which he was not well received ...couldn't answer who would be the dock police, how everyone was supposed to donate their time & float a new TAX...we are taxed at the state level for the public facilities on the lake already...i wrote him a public letter that basically stated that we enjoyed recreation at the lake to get away from people & crap like this along & blasted him 8 ways...thankfully he has vanished into the woodwork

    I live in the country got 15 acres been here since 1964, fellow bought 2 acre across the road from me put up street lights in his yard, his wife is scared of the dark, they don't want me to shoot, or burn or let the horse poop in front of there house when we ride on the road, objects to my R/C airplane or helicopters (invasion of privacy) like I'm looking at his fat arsed wife.
    Needless to say on days that the wind doesn't blow I burn leaves, weeds wood whatever I can get my hands on. Piss off the front porch. I get up almost every morning and celebrate my living through the night with a 21 gun salute with a 12 gauge. I don't really fire 21 times but I do fire off a few.
    These people have taken the place that I intended to live untill I die to wanting to sell and move into the mountains.
    I am thinking about getting some pigs and putting in a sty across from there house, just anything to make them as misrable as they have made me.

    I just bought a house about 2 years ago and it has a HOA. I didn't know much about them as this is my first home. My HOA hasn't tangled with me at all, however just the idea someone can demand something about what I want to do with the property I bought and paid for just drives me nuts. Really irks me I can't even have a boat on my property so I have to rent a space to store a boat if and when I buy one.

    I live in the country now (yeah, you CAN pee off the front porch!) but some years back, did live in a development with a HOA. Developer controlled the HOA. I was impudent enuff to ask for an accounting of what they did with association fees (to be used to maintain common areas, clubhouse, etc) They were VERY upset that ANYONE would ask for an accounting. But not as upset as 3 months later when they were convicted of felony embezzlement. The NEW HOA board members were homeowners. Serve max 12 months on the board, rotate.

    My one experience with a home owners association was wonderful! About 1700 members of Sea Ranch HOA got together and brought the California Costal Commission to its knees.[:D][:D][:D]

    HOA's are generally developed to enforce some person or groups image of the "perfect" community. The problem is everyone has different ideas about what that is but most (ownwers) are willing to make some sacrifices to be included even if it means giving up some of thier rights (is this starting to sound familiar?) . It has been my experiance that most people that live in these types of communities appear to have some level of OC disorder. As the original owners move out or die off that vision can often change drastically. That is when things can get dicy. Often a only a few of the original owners are left to hold on tothe original image and dispite being outnumbered they try to prevent any change by "taking control" often in violation of the HOA rules.
