Finally got signed up for a CCW class

Its about damn time.

I've been wanting to take the class for about 4 years now.

I was surprised that I'm only required to bring 20 rnds.

    when I took my class about 9 yrs ago, the last night we were allowed to bring any gun we wanted from home. I brought my S&W 686 357 mag...got yelled at for brining a magnum cartridge to the range and scaring some of the new shooters. I did not get smart with the trainer but gave him a look like "aren't we at a shooting range"?

    20 rds. doesn't seem like enough for someone who is new to shooting. I would think 50 practice rds. and 20 to qualify. Is that a one time class to get your CCL or do you have to go through it everytime you renew?

    Most of the classes are a freakin joke!
    A guy here uses the range I belong to for his classes,........3 shots from a .22 revolver.
    If you hit the paper, you get your certificate.

    I took a combat shooting course from a guy that was the rangemaster for our SO until 3 years ago.
    150 rounds were shot to get mine!

    I think it is wrong to give courses like the first I listed,.........maybe mine was overkill, but I wanted to take that course, and it was not cheap.

    Around here we have 70 year olds from NYC that have never shot a gun in their life,.......they shoot 3 rounds from a .22, and then go out and buy a larger caliber, and never train. I consider that a disaster waiting to happen.

    RackOps....You're in KY, right???? I used to be a CCDW intsructor, but gave it up because when it came time to recert as an instructor, I was in the middle of Paramedic class and didn't have time to go to Frankfort. Anyway, 20 rds is right. You'll have to shoot a fullsize silhouette target. As long as you get 11 out of 20 rounds ANYWHERE on the silhouette, you pass. That's pretty forgiving. What part of KY are you in?

    I think if someone doesn't have any firearms training (ie: military) they should get training before carrying in public. I know I will catch heck for that statement but I've seen too many idiots at the range and at the gunshops that don't have a clue about firearm safety.

    You don't even have to shoot to get your permit in PA. $26 and a background check. Sometimes you get "interviewed".

    The range/gun shop in my town offers the classes. Five week class, meets once a week for 3 hours. Great class and real good training.

    you guys are lucky!..only ones who can carry here now are police and licenced security guards[V]..no-one else, no exceptions! if you are caught you are in serious trouble!...unless you are a scum bag who had a rough upbringing...then its a slap on the wrist[:(!]if we could legally be armed in public here again i would bet 95% of gun owners would do it!..it sucks to loose your rights to self defence[V]

    No classes here in Georgia, just pay your money and submit to a background check. Good for 4 years. Don

    Our course took 2 days. 8 hours class time and 6 hours at the range.
    We had to fire at least 50 rounds each with a revolver and a semi automatic not less than .380 cal. After proving efficiency with Bench, Standing and Weaver styles we got to qualify.
    To qualify we had to hit a silhouette with the gun of your choice. I do not remember how many times.
    Course was taught by Marine instructor. (please notice I did not say "ex", something I learned here) The fun part was the live exercises. We ran into a maze of very dangerous chairs and tables. We had to drag the wounded instructor out while firing at and hitting different threat targets. He has mellowed the class a bit. When my wife took it there was only moving from target area to target area and firing, no dragging and defensive firing. It was actually not easy to fire and hit a target while aiding a 180 lb man that kept falling into you as you fired. One of my misses hit his target frame and really pissed him off. He passed me in spite of the broken frame. Good luck.

    I may be considered by some here as one of the idiots referred to above, and I couldn't agree more. I'm fairly new to shooting, only "training" is safety and how-to tips from my LEO son, and I would not be comfortable carrying anything until I'm more confident in my skills and judgement. I'm currently reading a lot and watching some shooting programs. Give me a little time, though, and I'm looking forward to a CCW myself. Maybe I'm too cautious, maybe the rest of the idiots should be so cautious, who knows?

    My wife took hers last year. She needed to take 100 rounds, 50 for practice and the other 50 had to hit a 8x11 piece of paper at 7yds. She took her .357 snubby & outshoot all the guys in her class. I think it was a 20 hour course on the weekend.

    If my 75 year old mother wants to carry a Pistol for her protection, shouldn't she be able to. This is America ya know. I don't think people need Military Training to carry to defend themselves. They are not being carried to be on the offense, thats for the criminals.

    I recently heard somewhere that 75-80% of shooting victims are shot with their own gun. I don't know how to verify that claim, but I'll take my chances without a gun in my posession until I become more proficient with it. Having the "right to carry a gun" is a very different question from "should you carry a gun." Carrying a gun does not mean she will be any "safer" than she is without it. If she does not have proper training she could in fact be in more danger carrying a gun than without it.

    I agree that a "military training" requirement is way overboard.

    {stands back & shields face from the rotton tomatoes that will undoubtedly be thrown at such a statement}

    Not surprising. I think women are naturally a better shot than men are.
    Might have to do with a womans ability to focus on a fine details.

    I said they "should" get training. I didn't say "shall". My state doesn't require any training for a CCL and I'm ok with that. I think that it's a good idea for someone who may need to use a handgun for protection to be be able to use it effectivley and to know the law's regarding said self-defense. I used the "military" training as an example. I'm not suggesting that only military trained folks should be allowed to carry. I've seen too many yahoo's at the range that don't know the first thing about responsible gun handling and they are the ones that give us all a bad name. A little training would do some of them good.

    I require that you not be a novice to handguns to take my class. You won't pass the shooting portion of the class. I ask this of potential students and if they are new to handguns I require that they take the NRA's First Steps class from me or someone else first. You need to fire 50 rounds and achieve a 90% or better score. The test is conducted at 21 feet in low light and darkness if available.

    I can't imagine that statistic is anywhere near accurate.
    Sounds more like anti gun propaganda to me.

    No offense taken. I can't even remember where I heard it, maybe from that Michael Moore video I watched as part of my firearms training?[:D]
