I have heard good things about the Taurus 1911. A friend has one that he says is very accurate and likes it very much. A friend of his bought one because of this advise.
We were at the range yesterday with his new Taurus and after about 30 rounds he began to have failure to fire. We assumed it was the white box winchester ammo that he got at Wally world. After about another 20 - 30 rounds, pieces fell off the gun !!!!!
It was the safety and the plungers and spring that hold in the slide lock and the safety. We found all the pieces.
    Now the question:
Was the safety not fully installed at the factory? Meaning not locked in by the plunger? It is the ambidexterous safety.
Was the dimple in the safety not properly machined?
Was the plunger that holds the safety in not properly machined?
Were the failure to fires caused by the safety working its way out of the frame and therefore not allowing the grip safety to work correctly which would allow the firing pin to not hit the primer as hard as it should because it was binding or not fully disengaging?

I do not have the gun with me, of course, and did not inspect it fully. I am sure he will be sending it back to Taurus for inspection and repair, but what are your thoughts. It would be a waste to send it back to Taurus if the only thing wrong with it was that it was not correctly assembled (all parts OK but safety was not fully inserted). If that is the case, would it be OK to just assemble it correctly and try it again?
I was thinking about getting one, but after this, I am not so sure.

    Thanks---Peabo

Saw one of these at the gun store for $480 nice grips (Walnut) maybe 300 rounds through it, nice clean gun and I think it has had some custom work done to it good deal or not??? Not real familiar with 1911 makers/versions...

Read a little on the expert side but that gets cut short quick. Heard a little on the bad side but no exact on what it did or why they do not like it.

So from those who have one what do you not like about it and why please be specific.

A magnificent example of a manufacturer responding to the needs of the customers...and producing a superb weapon at a affordable price.

Colt just wishes they could do as much.

I do not own one...merely because I have a Sig .220..have had for many years. I had the opportunity to wring one out shortly after they came out..and was more then a bit impressed.
I shall add one to my stable one of these days. I am still smarting under the sting of not buying one when they were 450 bucks. A month later, I went prepared to buy one.and the price was 550.

May I add.the Highway Patrolmen that won the National Pistol Championship for 8 years running also though so. He also ran several hundreds of rounds through that pistol.and gave it a flying colors pass.

    I've never shot one.
But what I don't like about them is what keeps me from buying one.
    An integrated lock mechanism.
I have no use for them in either the Taurus or Smith and Wesson.

I was looking a new stainless PT1911 a few weks ago and the safety popped out while holding it. I've read where they have that problem. Other than that problem and the finish not holding up on the blued models I've heard nothing but good things about them.

Come on there were folks on the expert side slaming it. But did not give a reason. All I've heard so far is one and am glad to hear that one as its something to watch out for and investigate better.

Perhaps many 'experts' feel that if they don't give 800 bucks for a Colt, then spend another 800 at the gunsmiths getting it to run...it ain't no good ?

I have a friend who bought one. Excellent finish and fit, and very accurate. It's a great good at a good price.

Yes sir! I shot one too. A buddy of mine has one. I love it! I told him to put me in his will a give the gun to me. I consider it to be a very fine carry. This guy has every gun he has ever bought. He has never sold a gun to NOBODY. He got his when they were about $450,,then bragged to me six months later that the price had gone up on them by $100,,, I'm old, I can't keep up with this poopquote:Originally posted by Highball

Iv'e got an older one PT945 but I love it, its never not went bang is accurate at 70-80 ft,(thats all I ever shot it at, never tried for longer distance) its light weight in comparing to colts or govt issue, Dan Wesson, No need to pay for repairs. Sights are easy to see, there ambidextrous. and double action. I cant imagine whats not to like.
Iv'e got 4 different kinds of 1911s and I usually carry the Taurus. I have heard about the safty problem with the new ones but mine has never fallen off. I'd give it a 4 1/2 stars.

    I also have a PT92, 9MM gotta be 20 yrs.fired at least 15000 times
    I have the Judge 45/410 100/150rounds.
357 mag 2in. mdl? several hundred rounds 2nd most common carry gun.
    22mag 6in. mdl ?1000 rounds or more
also a couple long guns that I'm not getting out of the safe.
I have never had a problem with any of the taurus products I own. I sing there praises. Every one who knows me could tell you that I dont keep guns that are problematic.
So i guess i'm in the Taurus fan club.they produce a solid gun for a fair price and I think like Highball said that if the people slamming think that if you dont pay $800 bucks for a $400 gun your not getting your monies worth. BOO HOO.

Anybody have a link to the safety problem. Heard it enough here that i would like to know if maybe there might be a recall to fix the problem.

I work part time @ a local gun shop.
Here are some issues that I have seen with Taurus pistols.
One customer bought "the judge" and one hole in the cylinder was too small to accept the 45lc.
Taurus pt 22- the grip cracked first time fired.
Several revolvers that the key lock malfunctioned.
One 1911 that the ambi safety broke. One side up the other side down with a round in the chamber.
Bottom line it is the most problematic line they carry.
If you buy and sell alot you will get hung out to dry.

If it is so bad what else have you seen. You onluy list one Item and call it problemmatic.

Lifetime warranty seem to mean I will not get hung out to dry.

I was speaking about the Taurus line as a whole.(being problematic)
I am about the third person to see the problem with the safety on the 1911.
Most problematic line of guns we sell.
Go buy the freaking gun. I only gave input on what I saw weekly.

My father-in-law came into the shop back in Nov. wanting to look a a Taurus 1911, I showed him a blue one and he liked it. I sold it to him at cost and we have both shot it alot.....well around 800rds. He has had no problems with it yet and I don't think he will for some time. The Taurus appears to be made as good or better than alot of 1911's on the market that cost alot more. The only thing I kind of don't like is that the grip seems a little bit narrow for me but because my pappy-in-law has smaller hands than I do, He loves it.

my best friend has one and both of us have put aleast 500 rounds w/ no problem it's very accurate and for the money you can't beat it,the only thing that is not perfect is the finish it scratches easly, i personaly own a 608- 8 shot .357 magnum and have put at least 1500 rounds w/ not one problem taurus makes very good firearm, but like any company defects happen no matter if it's a colt, a smith ,a kimber whatever but to try to say that taurus has nothing but problems or that a dealer looses money on them is just an opnion and should not be taken to heart

I don't like Taurus. They're made in Brazil. Most of them are a poor copy of a decent gun-PT92, most of their revolvers, etc.
I've only ever shot a couple of them but didn't like them.

I fired my neighbors blue Taurus 1911 and found it to be accurate and it fed everything. I wanted a stainless steel version and had the opportunity to buy one at a gun show in January 2008. While waiting for the paper work to go through, I noticed the thumb safety was very stiff.I brought it home and cleaned it, then noticed the barrel was pitted (brand new gun). Taurus said that the replacement barrel would have the serial number on it. I checked with them twice before mailing it to them for $65.27. The pistol came back to me without a numbered barrel. Calling Taurus customer service is like dealing with a third world country that doesn't like Americans. All they would say is that I have the repacement barrel, what do I want. I owned the pistol for two days and never fired it.So if you need to replace any serial numbered parts on your 1911 because of their poor quality control or material, it won't happen. Since then my neighbor, who is left handed looked over my pistol and worked the safety several times when the thumb safety on the left side popped out of the gun. A gun you can bet your life on, no way! Just be careful when dealing with Taurus and their products.

Guys at a nearby gun shop said they had two Taurus pistols come back with broken triggers? Not sure what models or what have you. Anyone else hear anything like this?

Father has a Taurus .38, model 85 or 82 maybe? Had great luck with it for about 10 years now.

He also had a pt-92 and pt-99. One was OK, the other was junk. Both were picky about magazines, with isnt a big deal I suppose. I will say the good one (the pt-99) was a fairly accurate pistol.

Since then he bought a Millenium in 9mm mainly because the price was right. VERY accurate for a compact pistol of this type and no malfunctions as of yet (around 400 rounds).

Notice dnelson that the replys are all over the Taurus product line and not just on the 1911. Don't own one, I have a 24/7, but got a chance like Highball to put one though its paces. I would call it supurb. But I like the 24/7 too so what do I know, maybe the I don't like it cause it is made in Brazil guys are right.

I have no problem with Taurus products, but if you buy one new plan to keep it forever because resale are almost nothing.I saw a couple of used, blued 1911s sale around the last gun show for 250 bucks.
