in australia if you call someone a bs#^*$d it is a compliment...as in how you goin` you old b$#@*&d..havnt seen you in years...also of course it can be said in such a way that there is no doubt that it is intended as an insult....but everyone here uses the word, and there is no offence meant or taken......there is even a club here called the old b#$&^%d club!a lot of visitors to australia are horrified when they hear australians calling each other b$%^&%$s..they cant understand why we dont kick the hell out of each other...

Dan- Since you're here I just wanted to say that my dad visited Australia during the war and it was one of the most memorable experiences of his life. He always spoke of how friendly the Aussies were and how they made him, as an American serviceman, feel like they were true allies.

He loved Australia and always wanted to return for another visit. Unfortunately he never made it back.

The one that gets me is that a gentleman's anatomy- the clinical term pen** is censored, while I can type vagina all day and it doesn't stop it. Sexist. [:D]

Seriously, though- some of the autocensor words look like they were written by 4 year olds. Ok, I appreciate that we're not grown up enough to play nice but can't bast[rd be changed to sob or something? Or something less......petulant than 'meanie?'

My father was in the store yesturday and the topic everyone happened to be on was...words that mean ugly things in other places. For some reason my father has learned the South African word for EGG-PLANT....he says it is an insult to be called that for them. Kind of like the "N." word. When I lived in Hawaii I had a cat named POPOLO....I thought it was "Black" in Hawaiian...but later I think it was a worse word because of all the looks I got when calling my cat. He was a gorgeous black persian cat and I took him to the beach to get some pictures. Yelling Popolo made all the locals stop what they were doing and watch. NOT GOOD.

Oh I don't know. I think there's a certain humor to the replacements.

    ice cream
    oatmeal
    bleen
    War on Terror

They're just so out of place in the contexts they're usually used.

I used to say, "No argument there!" to that. It usually got me an extra day grounding.

George Carlin did a routine on "dirty" words years ago.

He talked about the F word. It's a word that describes what two people do when they love each other. It's also the beginning of life.

So here is the F word hanging around with other nice words like Love and Life... but it's also a word that we tend to save untill the end of an argument.
