What is Epiphany?

Epiphany is a Christian holiday that is commonly associated with the visit
of the Three Kings to baby Christ. It is also the 12th day of Christmas,
as popularized by the song. In essence, Christmas does not end for many
Christians until Christ is revealed. In some Christian denominations
Epiphany does not end until Lent begins.

In some countries, Epiphany is celebrated with more vigor than is
Christmas. For example...

    Down here in Florida the Greeks celebrate it with a Dive to recover a cross. Usually participated in by young men only, In fact they just had it in Tarpon Springs Florida which is a thriving Greek Community..

    Epiphany is the Latin word (Roman Catholic). Eastern Orthodox (Greeks) use the word Theophany. It's celebration of when John the Baptist, baptized Christ and Christ's public ministry starts. It's also the time of the year when the majority of Holy Water is created. The RC (really only the Spanish speaking ones do the "The Three Kings Day". The majority of the RC and the Orthodox do not associate Epiphany with the Three Kings.quote:Usually participated in by young men onlyAre you crazy? Young men?     Yep, that's exactly what I thought too. Didn't know it was the name of a religious celebration or event.

    Always good to learn something new. Maybe learning something new is sort of a mini-epiphany. Now, if I can only find a way to use it three times in three sentences, maybe it will stay with me.

    This is the only definition that I was familiar with. I had never heard of it before in terms of a celebration. Hmm, learn sompin new every day.

    Okay, we all know what is is to have an "epiphany." A revealing, an enlightment, the little Edison light bulb over the head. Ford's "better idea."

    The FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY was yesterday, Jan. 6th. That's when the Wise Men visited the infant Jesus. Reviewing Luke, it is interersting that they were no longer in the stable but in a house by then. Some historians wonder if the Christ Child might have been a year old, or a couple of weeks. Luke does not call the visitors kings, but Magi or wise men. Luke doesn't say how many their were either, or what their names were. All that came from other, non-Biblical writings.

    Heard recently from an athiest fellow whose hobby is trying to poke holes in the Christmas story. He said Jesus wasn't born near our Dec. 25th, because there would not have been lambs then. I went back to Luke, and note that there isn't one darn mention of lambs anywhere. Sorry, you can't question Scripture based on the lyrics to "Little Drummer Boy."
