Getting stain off rifle blank
I have a new Boyd's blank. Goes to gunsmith to fit it. He says he got finger prints on it, so without calling and asking, he stains it all over with Watco.
What I wanted to do was start fresh with my Antique Winchester stains from Tapaderas. Tried 4-0000 steel wool, tried acetone, mineral spirits. I need to lighten this stock before I fix it and do it properly.
I am a bit worried about using a stripper. Any ideas?

As much woodworking as I have done, I haven't found any way to lighten up a stain without removing wood. Some say you can use bleach, but I find that it leaves a mess. I would let the gunsmith know that you expect what I would expect out of a professional. He should replace the stock, and just charge you once to inlet it. 0 -
strip it. dont be afraid. just get some watco oil and go back over it. We can walk you thru it, and it sounds like you will do a much better job than mr. finger print. 0 -

ps. I used Dads stripper from wally world..8.00 a qt..took off the factory finish easy..one coat..0
