Bobski High Standard help request
I have a Safe Queen.
Let me explain, Years and years ago I was introduced to High Standards on a memorial day BBQ trip with my Dad. A bunch of us brought guns and were out plinking in a pit when someone was kind enough to let me try his Space gun. As weird as it looked I fell in love with the the accuracy.
Years ago I ran across the new Houston version and ended up buying a new Supermatic Trophy. Little did I know what I ended up doing! It's basically been nothing but troubles from the get go.
Primarily Failures to fire, I am getting marks on the rim from the firing pin. I always figured "heck it's a 22 thats to be expected". It's also dropped the screws that held the rear target assembly to the frame. I went back and blue thread locked all the screws to prevent this again. As for failures to feed, It's never gone thru a full magazine (firing all rounds) for me to determine if I even have a feed issue.
Recently I've done a web search and am finding complaints on magazine feed issues, frame height issues with the texas guns, complaints of factory quality issues ( esp. the early texas guns) and lack of customer support and cooperation from High Standard.
I have seen a reference to some old posts at M.Central that briefly talk about a new firing-pin tapered vs. stepped. ( is this a possibility/ issue?) I don't think I've broken off anything on the pin as I have inspected the non detonated ammo and all the rims have been marked by the pin. I've tried at least 7 deferent types of ammo. I haven't pulled the pin out yet and if I need a different one, I'd rather have a new one here ready to switch along with a new roll pin as the pins a little sucker! I'd rather not loose parts while waiting for parts to arrive.

Status : Safe Queen, as every time I've tried it it's been nothing but a frustrating experience. Just completely unreliable.
I haven't counted the rounds fired but estimate under 200- 300 and thats being generous.
I pulled it out a month ago to introduce a neighbor to pistol shooting and sure enough it had nothing but issues, we moved on to the next higher caliber.
Is there any Suggestions / Ideas you may have in guiding me towards making this a reliable functioning High Standard?

weak springs maybe? many guns have aftermarket spring kits made; I'd start there.
also post in ask the experts if you haven't already. they's some fart smellers ova theah.0 -
Unless it left the factory with weak springs, It hasn't been used enough to merit that and my searches haven't found that to be a suggestion yet.
My thoughts are a new factory gun (I bought it new), springs would work longer.
At one time I had a S&W 422 and it lasted longer than that, I just hated it as it grouped terribly and it was a pain to tear down to clean. Why I jumped at the HS to replace the S&W.
Note to add: I'm avoiding the ask the experts section as due to the lack of easy to find Houston HS info on the web, I have a sneaky suspicion this might be more than a 10 post solution. [:(]0 -
If it were me I'd strip it to components and parts. Order springs from Wolff (magazine springs too) and swap them all out. I'd check for burrs and general gunk in the firing pin hole that may be catching and slowing down the pin for mis-fires. Look for rub marks and polish them.
Since you only shot 200/300 rounds I'll bet you'll eiher have to shoot another 1000 rounds or go in and actually polish the bits.
Change out the springs, polish and shoot more[;)].
I'm going through some issues with my 10/22 full build up (after market everything only thing stock are the magazines[:D]). The bolt sticks and rub up on the reciever. I've gone through almost 1000 rounds and it's getting better. I did try out some Remington Hi Velocity Golden (couldn't find any regular 22LRs) shot about 100 rounds near the end of the day. I recon I need to actually go and polish some bits after the next day out on the range. I should've done it last time I went and cleand the rifle but I got lazy[:D].0 -
early AF guns had troubles.
sell it and get a hamden high standard.
the time and effort you spend fixing it still leaves you with a lemon.

I signed on to Histandard info.
As to selling, I would prefer to work it out, I really don't want to pass on my problem to someone else. We will see what happens.

serious, once you get the firing pin and spring/mag problem solved, it will work fine.
fyi.....there were only 722 AF serial numbered guns made. i have the last one documented to leave the shop.[8D] never gave me a lick of trouble.

Guys at the range claim that the lips on on mags tend to bend outward and cause feed failures. Try someones else's mag. 0 -
If you haven't already, take a knife and clean the gunk out of the slide where the rim of the shell hits,that causes misfires in mine.I have an "F" serial # Houston it works fine.I did have to send my Stoeger pro series 95(Victor clone) back to factory for repair.Bobski right though, its hard to beat Hamden gun. 0
