Ok guys?
If you were going to install a 454 big block that gets just under 600Hp in a car, What tranny would you put behind it???
I'm leaning more towards a automatic just for driveablity issues, But manuals are Sooooo much fun to burn the tires off with[:p][:D][:D]

Does it really matter?[:D](I know that it does, but you know what I am getting at). 454 + car = a heck of a lot of fun![:p].

It depends on a lot of things, are you worried about weight, power robbing, and or racing?
If your not worried about weight, then go with the good 'ol Turbo 400, if you want overdrive, then a 700r4. If you want something light and not so power robbing, then a Turbo 350 would be good.
I have a Turbo 350 in my 850 horsepower Chevy II, because a Turbo 400 is too big! Just remember to install a good trans cooler, heat is a trans worst enemy!
Transmission Specialties makes a lot of different combinations and torque convertors, that where i got my convertor and trans from.

454 with 600 ponies, you'd still burn the tires off with an automatic!!!!! 0 -

I have a stick always had one always will. Dont know how bad azz the SS is now days but back in the day (1979) it ran 7.07sec 1/8 mile 98mph, with a stock Muncie a 12 bolt rear end and a 427cid ls6 heads, 600 flat tappet cam with a 538 gear.
All that is missing today is the 538 gear.
HP GUESS 525-600.
FUN TO DRIVE, SOUNDS GREAT, TURNS HEADS WHEN WE DRIVE BY.[:p]
it will burn the tires but it is also moving down the road as it does this, not like the guy sitting there smoking them down that cant get the car to move forward [:D]0 -

Thanks Mango.....Its going into a 65 Chevelle Malibu SS[:p]0 -
i think it depends what the end use of the car will be . the set up will be different for street cruzing then it would be for on track drag racing or showing the car .
a good auto can preform very well and handle the hp ,while a 4 speed is a lot of fun and looks very cool .0 -
Stevenrayspeck,
What rpm stall convertor are you looking at?
Are you driving on the street or racing it, or both? Mine is street driven most of the time, with an occasional blast down the track. I haven't raced it with my new engine yet, we're going in May.
Check out Transmission Specialties, they are very nice to talk to and have a lot of different products to fit your needs and their prices are very good. I use to have a Coan convertor in my car that cost $800, and the comparible model from TS was only around $400. Big difference, same quality.0 -

Manual trannys have more of a "driver feel". You can control shifting better. you can start the car even if the batteries are dead. However, manuals can be a hassle for city driving - driving in bumper to bumper traffic on a slight incline.
Automatics are just plain convenient. Not much driving experience is needed. they are so much easier to drive in traffic jams, The gas consumption difference between manuals and automatics are negligible for most cars.

Powerglide!!!! 0 -
Manuals are fun! But when you have a supercharger, it gets to be a little crazy driving with your foot slammed to the floor. Auto's are easier.
If you want the launch of a manual trans, you could always put in a trans brake, but then you're building more of a race car then a street car.
I enjoy my car on the street more than anything, and with the Electronic Fuel Injection, 850 hp, and 4.56 gears, i still get 10 miles to the gallon!0 -
Sweet car Hunter Mag!!![:p]
Mine will be used mainly for driving around town with a occasional run down the track.0 -

Maybe...Maybe not.... Depends on what size block he has.... More Cubic inches at lower compression still gives plenty of Hp without wasting a lot of gas.
Pluss you can get better fuel mileage with EFI over Carburated.0
