selling a gun locally
I have a kel-tec P-3AT that I need to sell. I have read the selling tips on GB and dont feel comfortable selling in an auction, so Ive decided to sell locally. I think the P-3AT has a value of about $150 at 80%, my P-3AT is in great condition and has been fired less than 25 times so I imagine I could classify it as 80%. one local dealer offered me $60-$70 trade in and I just dont want to go that low.
So my questions are:
1. would I get more by going to a gun show and offering it to everyone I could find.
2. if I sell locally by classified ad, am I responsible for making sure the buyer is legal to buy the hand gun?

I have taken guns to local shows and just walk around holding them, either with a sign or without. People will stop you and ask "what you got there and how much you want....." I usually have a price in mind or once or twice I've just said I don't know what it's worth, make me an offer and someone always will BUT, everyone is out to steal your gun...... no pun intended.
GB gives you a more broad look at what the gun is worth across the network. IT might be worth more in one region of the country or another.
I have found my best "value" for my asking price has been trading but ONLY when trading UP. IF you're trying to trade your lower end gun on a high end gun, you'll always get more for yours.

Question #2 depends on your state laws. In NY for example, you must confirm the purchaser's handgun permit and turn that number and information into your pistol permit office to have it removed from your permit OR transfer through an FFL. Other states do not have such a requirement. However, if you KNOWINGLY sell a handgun to someone you know is not eligible to own a handgun (felony conviction, etc.), you can be held responsible. Check with your local law enforcement or handgun licensing office. 0 -

Possibly, if you sell to the end user and not a dealer. Also, since it is a FTF sale, with no paperwork, the buyer may be willing to pay a little more, but you should be aware that prohibited persons like to buy this way too.

ABSOLUTELY YES! Federal law must be observed, as well as state and local laws. If you sell that handgun to a person in a prohibited categor as set forth on the Form 4473, or to a person not a resident of your state, you are violating the law. I believe the fine can run as high as $250G with a 10 year prison sentence.
Will you get caught? Probably not. Is it worth the risk? Definitely not.0 -

If you do sell it face to face insist on a drivers license, and get the name, address, age and license number for your records. Better to sell it here as it will go though an FFK and a 4473 will be filled out (unless the buyer happens to be from your home state and you allow theme to pick it up). 0 -

Too bad you didn't live in Indiana, as I would buy it for your asking price.
1.Who knows, maybe or maybe not. Just depends on how bad someone wants it.
2. I would say yes. A good way to be sure the buyer is OK, is to either tranfer sale through an FFL, or write down their CCW info and keep a record of it.0 -

A person may sell or transfer a firearm to a licensee in any State. However, a firearm other than a curio or relic may not be transferred interstate to a licensed collector.

I don't know where you get that. I can buy guns (carefully) for less on GB INCLUDING shipping and transfer FFL fee for as mucH as $50 less than I can buy the same gun locally including tax. Not everything, nor from ever seller, but just about every week.0 -

This is untrue...you can sell to anyone over the age of 18 in most states when it's done as a private transfer. Only dealers cannot sell to folks under the age of 21.0 -
I think you're undervaluing your gun. Unless you're in a really big hurry for the money, sell it here.

ECC i know your right as ive seen this on FloridaShootersNetwork.com tons of times, but what happens if that 18 year old is pulled over for say speeding and the pistol is found. Its not loaded, its in the trunk in a secure case. Does he get bopped for being uder 21 and in posession of a handgun?0
