run into someone that claimed that black talons would drill into body armor and were cop killer bullets. he also said they were illegal in WV. i couldn't convince him otherwise so he bet me 5 bucks. i am wondering how i will prove he is wrong or even if i should try.[:o)]

Drill a hole in body armor?
Depends.. I will say that it is a good chance that a 30-06 will go through a lot of body armor. While a less lethal round, say a 9 mm or .45 will not.
You can put a wooden broom stick through a 2' dia. Oak tree if you can get enough velocity behind it.0 -

For $5 its probably not even worth the effort to try because in these cases one runs into the issue of a person not believing the truth even when handed to him on a silver platter. The website listed above should be enough to claim the $5.
But if you want to push this, tell him that $5 is peanuts, that you are willing to back your own convictions with a $1000 bet, and ask him if he'll man up to match it.
Assuming the answer is "yes" (I got $100 cash right here that says it WON'T be [;)]), you take your $1000 cash, and his, and give them both to a trusted third party.
You then go on Gunbroker, buy a box of the fricking things for $50 and a ballistic vest, and take them both to the range, where you demontrate in front of him and the third party how they don't go through.
Guarantee it would be the most fun way for you to net $500 you'd ever have!0 -
Because a police officer happend to be killed by a Black talon bullet it was "Dubbed" "Cop Killer bullet" It is in fact inferior to other type bullets. Here part of a report I dug up.
The four kinds of ammo I tested were: Federal Hydra-Shok, Winchester
Black Talon, Remington Golden Saber, and PMC Eldorado StarFire. The
Black Talon was the only round to reach the fourth bottle, which it
perforated but did not enter. All bullets tested were recovered from
the third bottle from the front. All four expanded well, with the
StarFire exhibiting somewhat wider mushroom than the others, the Golden
Saber having the most nicely rounded, scalloped expanded shape. Viewers
of the results at the range agreed that all four performed very well.
The biggest "splash" of exploding water back toward the firing line
came from the StarFire. All four had fairly well-peeled back jackets;
Black Talon was pointier than the others but definitely not the hazard
you heard reported in the news media.
My personal recommendation would be the StarFire first, then Black Talon,
then Golden Saber, then Hydra-Shok. However, they are all good choices.0 -
I have shot Black Talons into an old vest of mine. They did NOT got through.
I still have the vest. Contrary to vest makers claims, the vests are good for multiple hits. I have shot everything from .22lr to .44 handgun, buckshot, and several rifle calibers into this vest and the only thing it has not stopped were the rifle rounds... 7.62X39 and 5.56mm.0 -

Black Talons are the ONLY round I will fire. This hasn't been proven, but I believe they were the rounds used in the Kennedy assassination. You know, where the bullet passed through Kennedy and made a ninety degree turn prior to entering John Connoley's body? That's right! They will turn in flight on command. I don't have to be a good shot; I just use BTs and I can think them home.
Since this guy is the one that made the bet, it's up to him to prove it, not you. Just Google up "Black Talon range test" or something like that and gather some data. Hardly worth $5.00, but.....
On the other hand, if he brings it up again, just hand him $5.00 and say, "You win." Hopefully that will end it.0 -
As I mentioned before, I saw a "classified" video of a ballistics testing on cadavers. The Black Talon was an "average" performer with "acceptable" expansion. The Cor-bon, Gold-Dot and Eldorado Starfire are much more devastating rounds, with the Cor-Bons delivering the most damage. Winchester did re-introduce the "black talons" under the Ranger SXT name. Another media created sensation, nothing more. 0 -
