I think I am going to try turbo tax this year. Because of my job change, I didn't know a safe number to withhold, so I erred on the side of caution. I expect some sort of return this year. 0 -

I got mine yesterday, went to H&R Block, because i have a simple tax return, just my income, nothing special about it. Took me about 15 minutes, i was out, just had to call her with my checking account number. I know you guys already know this but get it directly deposited, it only takes 8-15 days, a paper check will take 3 weeks.0 -

I have used Turbo Tax the last three or four years and been happy with it. Last year my wife did some work in Kalifornia and we had to pay some taxes there. Used Turbo Tax "State" and it was a big help. You can also use TT to determine your witholding for the 2008 tax year.0 -

Well, I hate to tell you but you just threw extra money away then. Going there to have them work on your taxes is for people with complex situations.
(If your income is under 54k) At irs.gov, they give a list of free e-filing services that walk you through the process, including one form H&R block. I did it this year. You enter everything off your W-2 and whatever else. You can't screw up and it's free. Get's submitted electronically and you can sign up for direct deposit. Right from your home computer. I did have to send them a signature form I had to download the next day and mail in but it does not delay your return.
Very handy site and they give links to check the status. My $1,514.00 check gets sent out Feb. 8th.
For 29.99, I had it automaticaly transfer everything over to my state form there also and submitted it electronically. Found 30 dollars extra on the state that I wouldn't have claimed had I went the paper way so it paid for itself. State return done and sent in oooohh, 3 minutes? Maybe 4.0 -
...If your situation allows you to use Turbo Tax, or do it the "old" way on paper...do it yourself; especially if it's the EZ form. I can do an EZ form in 30-40 minutes the "old"way.
...Your wasting a lot of money by not learning(easy!) to do the EZ form yourself. The "old" way forms, free...Turbo Tax, about $20 bucks...H & R for a simple EZ, about $135 bucks around here...[;)]

Cost me 40 bucks, she gave me a 30 dollar off coupon at the end! And its easier for me just to go to her, make sure its all done right, and get a quick return. Different strokes, different folks.0 -
I've already paid $15,000 (I pay every quarter). I will still owe approx. $8,000! Now the govt. wants to give refunds to people who do not even pay any taxes. Is this a great country or what? 0 -
I agree with COLT. The tax prepares (or the tax software folks) have gotten people to believe that it is nearly impossible to do your own taxes and your refund (I have not seen one of those in decades) is a result of their brilliance. Probably half the people filing in this country can get by using 1040EZ and another 25% can use 1040A. Even the 1040 form is not impossible if you have just the usual itemized deductions. While I admit that I pay someone to do my taxes I also admit that my income situation is fairly complex and that I am lazy as hell! 0 -
E-filed both my state and fed tueday last week, got both deposited direct today. Now I've got a four inch lift kit for my Wagoneer ordered, ought to be here Monday. 0 -

Uncle Sam appreciates that $650+ per month interest free loan you gave him each year. This is another aspect of tax preparers that is a bit irksome, they act like a refund is some gift from the IRS. Instead of finding ways to get you are refund there should be a program for getting your deductions correct in order to end up paying ZERO at the end of the year and getting back as little as possible. For some of us writing a check at the end of every April is simply economic reality, but most folks should be able to balance their deductions and get that money in their pockets every month. Some of my employees look at a big tax refund at the end of the year as a sort of forced savings account with the IRS, but man, that is a tough way to have to set aside money: No interest payments and no say at all over where it goes to.0 -
Guys this isn't free money.
It's not what you get back that counts.
