Ride-along

I'm doing a ride along with a Barron County Sheriff Deputy tonight. It's going to be a long night, but it might be fun.

Any of you LEOs out there work for a department that offers ride alongs?

    my husbands department dose ride a longs. However everytime I ride with him nothing happens all night LOL I'm a bad luck charm[:D]

    Ride along is done. It started off pretty slow with a suspected burglery that turned out to be nothing. Next was a call about suspicious people around an unoccupied residence. Turned out to be nothing. A very brief courtesy stop to let some teenagers know that their license plate lights were not working. No big deal. Then it was very quiet until about 1:30ish am when we got a call about a roll-over accident out in the middle of nowhere with 2 injuries. Husband and wife, both drunk, driving too fast on slippery roads, lost control. Don't know how many times they flipped, but from the point that they lost control at to the point where the car came to a rest was about 125 yards or so.

    I did a week long ride along with our City Police in High School. Best part was sitting in an unmarkerd motor home while guys were doing a drug deal 10 ft in front of us. All the cops were laughing inside about how dumb these guys were. They turned on a siren and 3 cops jumped out and we stayed in the motor home chasing a suspect down an alley that was no wider than the vehicle we were in. It was a blast. Once they got the druggies, they whipped out the latex gloves and were going looking for the drugs...NO THANKS!!!

    I did ride-a-longs in one form or another for 33 years. Sometimes I still do them.... when I'm alseep [:)]

    I did a ride-along about 7 or 8 years ago with a friend of mine that was the Chief of Police in a small town. We got into a pursuit that went almost 60 miles with speeds at times of 110 mph. When the pursuit finally ended, there were 38 police cars at the final stop. After that, I decided that I NO LONGER wanted to be a police officer and went into EMS as a Paramedic!!

    38 cop cars? Bet the perp got some good flashlight therapy!

    Yes. Minor injuries. Last I heard, they were talking about charging the driver with Injury by Intoxicated Use of a Motor Vehicle, which is a criminal offense according to the Wisconsin Criminal Code. I know it falls under Statute 346.61, but I can't find what level crime it is.

    I would think nothing happening would be very good luck. If cops enjoy making arrests, then common sense tells me something is wrong with them.

    That's in Minniesota. Minniesota is almost as nice as Wisconsin.

    i was a reserve officer for all most 2 years , finally saw how cops really are and decided to do some thing else

    Once upon a time the PDs used to encourage them so's the populace could interface with the police experience, but nowadays everybodys too worried about liability. Can't believe they took you on a stake-out/drug bust.

    First and last time I asked about one was about 20 years ago, and was told that after I jumped through all the hoops I'd have to ride in the back, although they generously allowed that I wouldn't have to be handcuffed.

    I wonder if you had a CCW permit if you would be able to carry on a ride along. I don't think I'd want to do one if not...

    Ride-alongs used to be encouraged a long time ago. Some regular ride-alongs that had CCWs were also allowed to carry while in the patrol car. But they were warned that at any time, if a call was determined to be to dangerous, they will be dropped off at the curb.

    When I had a ride-along I usually determined the training and mind set of my ride-along and if I liked where their head was at, I would provide a handgun for their use in case the fertilizer hit the ventilator.

    Sounds reasonable to me. My concern with doing a ride along would be the lack of personal protection, especially considering the crap cops have to deal with.
