Broward Sheriff's Office accuses grandma of stashing cocaine in bra
Broward Sheriff's officers arrested an Oakland Park grandmother who they said concealed four bags of cocaine in her bra during a weekend drug sting.
BSO arrested eight people -- many of them members of the same family -- at or near the home of Henrietta Corvin Daise, 320 NE 35th Ct.
The arrests came as part of a crackdown by the agency in the Harlem McBride neighborhood, which is undergoing new construction and redevelopment and prompting authorities to focus on banishing the drug scene.
Around 6 p.m. Friday, BSO executed a search warrant on the home and found Daise, 62, with powder cocaine stuffed in her bra, BSO said.
Authorities said they also found baking soda and a pen cap, used for snorting drugs, in her bra.
''It was a peculiar case,'' said BSO Detective Henry Lopez.
Also arrested at the home were her grandchildren, Tamarcus Daise, 26, and Kendrick Davon Daise, 19.
Another grandchild, Markedus Daise, 25, ran south along the house, dropping cocaine as he was being chased on foot by detectives until he was captured, BSO said.
In all, 20 crack cocaine rocks, four grams of powder cocaine, marijuana and $1,000 cash were found, BSO said in a news release.
The eight face various charges including possession and intent to sell cocaine within 1,000 feet of a church, probation violations and marijuana possession. The house is less than 152 feet from the Welcome Baptist Church, and adjacent to Dr. Carter Woodson Community Park, BSO said.
Lopez said that the members of the family would often sell drugs at the park or the church, creating a nuisance. Relatives worked as ''lookouts,'' at the park or church, alerting others when the police were in the area, he said.
Others arrested in the sting include: Dustin Jacob Pennington, 22, of Oakland Park; Alphonso Maurice Butler, 24, of Fort Lauderdale; Joseph Allen McGauley, 47, of Smyrna, Ga.; and Larry Darnell Freelove, 17, of Lauderdale Lakes.
