    ... it's a beginning, at least.

What you need to do is to be appointed his guardian and conservator. If you are the guardian and conservator, you can then deal with the court appointed attorney, and should be able to make decisions for him regarding his criminal case, and definitely with regard to his medical care. You will have to get a private attorney in Arizona to do this, as it is not something that the government does. I would suggest looking on Martindale Hubble's web site, and looking for a probate attorney in Maricopa county. Look for someone, if you can, with an "AV" rating, but it isn't the be all and end all.

It's not your fault nunn. It's times like this that your only comfort is in knowing that God has a plan.

It was an interesting trip, somewhat serendipitous, but mostly uneventful.

Had to go there on Uncle Sam's dime to testify in a trial in U.S. District Court. Some bonehead was buying and re-selling guns without a license. A LOT of guns. One of them was one he got from me. I will have to wait and see how the trial came out. I said my piece and was excused, and later the trial was recessed. The government had made a pretty good case against him for just selling without a license. I would have felt a lot better about it if they had been able to establish that he sold even one gun to a person who would have been otherwise prohibited from receiving it.

While there, I went to see son Mark in the Maricopa County Jail. He is in the psychiatric unit, and that's good, because that's where he belongs. The visit did not go well. To start with, he told the officers that the man who came to see him is not his father. Then, he had to be dragged into the room where the camera was. (It was a video link visit.) Then, all he did was grin and curse me and boast about how he was running the jail, and that he likes it in there. Says he is not taking, and will not take medication. I asked him about his belongings and he said he didn't care about them. After a few minutes, he put the phone receiver down and just stared at the camera, grinning.

Had a short phone visit with his attorney. He says Mark still will not see him, even though they have a hearing scheduled. I told the attorney that if he will get Mark to complete the proper documents, I will come back to Phoenix in my truck and get his belongings out of his car to keep him from losing it.

I can't see that there is anything else that I can do. One or more of you suggested that I hire a paid attorney, but I think that would be a waste of resources. If Mark won't talk to the public defender, he probably won't talk to a hired gun either.

Man David....I'm sorry to hear it. That has to be some tough stuff to deal with. Prayers sent.

As for the firearm dealing thing...We have to follow the laws, even if they are un-Constitutional...If he's not selling to folks who are prohibited, then there should be no case.[V]

Well on the upside, the state will probably commit him for treatment at trial. Help is on the way hopefully. Sentencing shouldn't go harshly if common sense is used. You know he is sick so don't beat yourself up as a parent but I know it still hurts knowing what condition he is in now.

I'm sorry to hear about your visit, Nunn. At the very least, you know Mark's in a place where he can't hurt himself or others. I pray he gets better and I pray that you don't beat yourself up over this.

Thank you for telling us. It must have been hard.

Have you thought about doing what jgreen suggested??

I'm sure some of us could kick in a little to help out.

So you did have to go to testify after all. Bummer.

    Sorry to hear about Mark.
As you are wise enough to see, other than try to get his stuff, there isn't anything else that you can do. You can not help those that do not want help.

Prayers continue for Mark. I'm glad he's under medical supervision if he's in that condition. Prayers for you too David. You don't need this agrivation.

SOunds like he's doing a lot of grinning. I guess that's a good thing. Better than the alternative.

I'm no prayer giant, but when I do, I do pray for him.

He is in the manic phase which wont last forever. He will snap out of it and come to his senses eventually. In the mean time as others suggested, you should get power of attorney and speak for him before he messes up his life even more......

Good luck Nunn, I feel for you.......

He won't communicate. An attorney can get you POA for the purpose of claiming his belongings. Should be easy (relative statement) due to the circumstances.

And please sleep less fitfully knowing he can do no harm to others, or to himself. And that there's a roof over his head, as well as "3 hots 'n a cot". He's not curled up in some alley shivering from the night cold. There's a lot to be said about that, considering his condition. Joe

Mark's mom knows some people, and can get stuff done. She is going to see a lawyer tomorrow about guardianship.

I am sorry to hear that your son Mark has not seen any improvement since we last heard about him. Sick or not, to have had one of my daughters speak to me or treat me the way that your son spoke to you would bring me more pain than I think I could bear. I admire your strength and hope things get better.

I don't know you personally Mr. Nunn but I'm only a couple counties away and do have some firsthand experience with troubled family members. If there's anything a concerned friend could help with, please say so.
