I hired an 18 year old girl as an assistant. Her husband is 82nd Airborne and he rides the saw for his squand in Iraq at the moment. She comes in with peace symbol earrings this morning. I ask her if this was her way of making a statement about the "duality of man". Then I realized the movie was made before she was. She has never seen it. Should I give her a copy?

The book by Gustav Hasford The Short Timers (which became the film Full Metal Jacket) was published while I was finishing graduate school and reading it took up the only free minutes that I had back then. I like the film but the book was really entertaining. I remember reading that when Hasford approached a few publishers they were reluctant to put his book into print since it "Made the Marines look like nothing more than a bunch of professional killers"

Parts of the Book and movie are 180 degrees opposite - "Pyle" is the Honors Graduate of his platoon in the book..... who would have thunk?0 -
Take it from a 20 year "lifer" Marine NCO E-8, much of the first part of the movie FMJ was very real-Boot Camp at P.I.circa the mid-l960's. The Gy/Sgt. D.I. was portrayed by R. Lee Ermey, who was actually a S/Sgt. and a D.I. at San Diego- home of us "Hollywood Marines"- he was never promoted to E-7- Gunnery Sgt. during his 10 years in our Beloved Corps, he was in charge of civilian base workers clearances at DaNang l967-69 (read "Dogpatch" and "Fort Dodge" into this sector if you like (and were there then). Gomer Pyle was a "snuffie" his only salvation was his ability to shoot the M-14 rifle well, and as every Marine is a rifleman, and the non-quals (below 190/250 score) are lower than whale poop, well you can figure it out I'm sure. Lock and Load.. 0 -
Full Metal Jacket is two movies, and both suck. The "boot camp" movie has been done enough times to gag a maggot; the "war" movie was the sorriest representation of Tet-era Vietnam combat ever made.
Kubrick should have quit after A Clockwork Orange.

I didn't like the movie. Seemed kind of like some doped up hippie made it with the intent of giving the Marines a bad rep. I never met a bad Marine. Not too bright, but good guys all the same. Can't say the same for the hippies. 0 -

Clockwork Orange is one of my all-time favs...
I don't know anything about the military so I enjoyed FMJ as entertainment.
DWS, and those who served, see the holes in the movie cause they are intimately familiar with the subject matter, more so than the movie maker. The same reason I avoid lawyer shows...0 -

Jeez why don't you guys just throw yourselves on the ground, roll around in some mud and start oinking. I shouldn't say that. Atleast a pig can be taught to sniff out a trouffle. You fellas have the palette sensitivity of a brush goat. A man of truly refined tastes knows a good sipping bourbon must be aged to proof in a charred oak barrel stored in a well ventilated dark outbuilding for a minimum of ten years before you even think of bottling it on a full moonlit night just after the last spring frost. That's right, I'm talking about Big Daddy's Sippin' Licker, spoken of in hushed and reverend tones around a very few select camp fires until the hollering and the naked running through the woods after surprisingly agile woodland nymphs begins about three quarter the way through the jug. Poor Donny, I don't know if Uncle Fred or his old coon hound will ever forgive him.0 -
i carried a extra belt of ammo for our m-60 gunner and if he wasted it like the gunner in FMJ,he could just carried his own from then on.
our thumper man always needed extra rounds and i would have just carried them. eastbank.0 -
