silouhette shooting?
am looking into joining a pistol club in the area for fun. they have $2.00 silouhette shoots every friday night. all I have right now is a 1966 Ruger Mark 22lr...will this do?
I was thinking of selling it and and putting another $200 or so towards a Browning Buckmark, would it be worth it?

I wouldn't sell anything until you have gone and participated a bit first. After you have gone a few times you will have a chance to shoot other people's firearms and get a real feel for what you might like.....before you buy anything. If it goes the normal route for you it will be addictive as heck and you will be special ordering a $1,000 handgun and loading your own "specialized load" to win the prize. Brownings aren't the typical silouhette shooter's choice from what I hear. Ruger is a good one to start off with....but be certain to perfect the "score's don't matter to me" face. It will amaze you how into this some people are. If you get in with a good bunch they will teach you what they know and everyone will look foreward to being together and having a great time each week. 0 -
This Ruger is a bear to get back together!!! Is there anything in the $300 range that would be better than this for silouhette? I highly doubt I'll spend $1000 on a silouhette gun (my wife would kill me for one). But if I could get a $300-$400 22lr and have some fun with it (and clean it without wanting to throw it through a wall) that would be good. 0 -
Yes the Ruger is a pain to put back together the first 150 or so times trying it, but it gets better after that. Look into a single shot or bolt action pistol with at lest a 10" barrel, that would give you what your looking for with out spending a ton of money. But like LF said, go shoot a few matches and see if you really enjoy them, then you can put a package together.

There's an older gentleman at our silhouette club that shoots a Browning; I have yet to see anyone outshoot him, and I've been a member since '85! It's the shooter; not the gun!
The Ruger should get you started, but consider a T/C Contender or Encore for the Production class with iron sights, or some folks have used Freedom Arms 22WMRF revolvers to good effect.
Read everything you can on the subject, get familiar with shooting 5 shots in a minute or so, then shooting 5 more , then, well, you get the idea.
I have used a Security Six, a Ruger Gov't Competition Target, Ruger GP100, Dan Wesson, Rossi 971, Colt Woodsman 3rd model, T/C Contenders, S&W 2206, Grendel P30, H&R 949 and an Iver Johnson TP22 over the years to shoot matches with; and each has it's challenges.
The point is; go, enjoy, start competition and you'll be a better shooter for it!0 -

When reassembling hold it upside down so the striker falls out of the way. Saved many a drywall patching days that way.0 -
When my gunclub started these shoots, I jut mounted a scope to my Ruger Mk I and went at it. Big fun and it doesn't take long to get hooked. My Ruger has the shorter barrel (4 or 5") and it does take a lot of concentration to hold that thing still and do halfway decent. The only other gun I've tried was a Contender - probably a 10" barrel. I will say that contender was way easier to hold on target. I can't help but think what kind of scores I could put up with one of those.....now you've got me thinking I better go over to the auctions & find me a contender..... 0
