Another electrical ?

I see folks askin about electrical problems from time to time so now its my turn.In my shop i have 16 fluorescent fixtures each with four 4 foot lamps in each.Been gettin darker in shop so like the bright fellea i am i looked up at them yesterday and noticed several of em are out so i bought 36 bulbs and proceded to change em ,still did not work.After a bit of cussin i notied every fixter had same two lamps out,was the two inside lamps on each light.Any one tell me what i gotta do next,i,m baffeled.Iwoulden think the ballest would be bad in every one.Thanks,Paul

  Well, I ain't much of an electrician, but here goes.
  
  I have a bunch of two tube lights in my shop. They are called "shop lights" and you can buy "shop light" tubes. I don't know what the difference is between them and "regular?" tubes. I also change all the tubes in the fixture when I change any, and yes I have had bad balasts. I Happen to have a box of old balasts I got from a guy years ago. I don't think they are probably worth buying balasts for though, but that is just a guess.

  Most of the "4 bulb" fixtures I've opened up have 2 2 bulb ballasts in them.
  Feel the top of the fixture after the lights have been on for a hour. The hot spots are defective ballasts, the warm spots are working ballasts.
  Depending on how the lamps are wired, you might have 2 separate power feeds, IE: 1 is feeding the "outside" ballasts, and 1 feeding the "inside" ballast.
  If it's cold in your shop, you might consider getting some 8" 2 bulb "high output" fixtures. Standard ones don't like to light when the temp is below 45-50deg, while the HO's will light down to around zero
