another water softener ?

ok it's a go i'm getting a culligan gold system less than a year old installed for 200 bucks {yahoo}

ok what type of salt do you guys/gals use? or do you prefer potassium chloride salt substitute rather than sodium?

do you have a filter on your kitchen sink for drinking water or do you bother with one at all,{a dedicated line is not really an option}, i know the salt used is sodium bicarbonate, not sodium chloride but i'm wondering about taste anyway, for coffee mainly

    I use the Morton blue bag salt.

    I have a small water facility on my well though.
    First it goes through sediment filters, as it is being injected with a chlorine pump.
    It then sits in a large fiberglass "exposure" tank, that gives the chlorine time to kill any bacteria, including iron bacteria.
    After that it passes through a softener sized carbon filter tank to remove the chlorine that was injected in the first place![:D]
    From there it passes through my softener, and into the house.

    From there, I have a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink for drinking water, and my ice maker.

    Edit: If you use an RO for drinking water you can use whatever you want in the softener,......if not use the potassium chloride if anyone in the house has a HBP issue, as a very small amount of sodium will remain. If not, it doesn't matter.

    I have city water and a similar softener and RO unit as marc1303. I use the PS because I have nuclear blood pressure.

    The softener only removes the minerals out of the water. I noticed that if the water tasted funny to begin with it will taste funny after the softener. but the RO takes care of what the softener doesn't.

    I was using the blue bag also Marc...but on the bag it says for solar systems. I am now using the yellow bag. It's the one with the bigger pellets. It's suppose to be better for your system.

    I have a culligan system as well, salt is delivered by culligan the bag reads "Culligan water softener salt, solar extra coarse, sodium chloride" I do use a small under sink filter. You "stole" that system for $200.00[;)]

    At $200, INSTALLED,you made-out quite well. That system is close to $3000 new, and parts for it are very available, so you'll be able to keep it going for a long,,, long time..

    i'm getting it as a result of my brothers divorce, he used to install, and repair them, he got it last January so it has 19 year life expectancy left

    i just bought his brand spanking new g.e. refrigerator for 200, double door, ice-maker 1,200 new, and am second in line for the plasma tv

    it's in, i went with potassium chloride, we drained everything so even the hot water is now soft, down to 3.5 instead of the 18+ we had, and OMG is there a difference, the difference on your skin is just amazing, i've done 3 loads of clothes with no added softener and everything is just suppl


    IF YOU DON'T HAVE ONE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR MISSING, heck even a cheaper model would do, i'll never go without one again

    My ice maker, kitchen cold and outdoor faucets are unsoftened. Rest of house including toilets is softened.

    Filter on kithen faucet for drinking, cooking and tea pot. I use distilled water for coffee-maker. That way it never gets clogged with lime or minerals.

    I think my toilets get hot water to help keep them from getting condensation on the outsides plus they have insulated tanks. Geothermal heating and cooling pre-heats my hot water as well.

    I went to a lot of trouble to have my house built the way I wanted it.
