Torn Meniscus
Well I have been having knee problems for 2 months now and finally after trying physical therapy and everything else I convinced them to give me a MRI .. well low and behold they found I have a torn meniscus. I will have arthroscopic surgery after hunting season here in New York .Anyone here have one of these and how long to recover ? How do they actually fix this ? Im 43 if that matters .

Had arthroscopic surgery late Wed afternoon. Doc said I had a complete tear. Im in quite a bit of pain although Vicodin is helping. They have me scheduled for therapy today already and I dont feel like I can move this thing. Did you guys have therapy so soon after having this ? 0 -
Yep. Started the next day after surgery with mine. Don't slack off on the PT. Good luck! 0 -
It heals slow because of the lack of blood flow. There are two schools of thought. Rest(a little physical therapy) or aggressive physical therapy (like athletes). Exercise should increase blood flow to the area and aid in healing. Good luck and take some Vicodin before your sessions!quote:Originally posted by MFI

Yep. On all 6 surgeries to my knees they had me up an moveing the very next day.
Normally I was walking the next day full time but was told to keep crutches near by incase it really started hurting to were I could not take it.
Just listen to the doc and you will be fine.0 -
Not to worry. Your first day of PT will likely be a range of motion study, ultrasound and some light massage. You won't do any weight training for a week or so.
I had my 2nd knee surgery last Nov. Don't let anyone kid you, it's a slow healing process.0 -
Best thing to do is get it moving ASAP. The sooner you can start pushing the envelope on range of motion the better.
Is the vicodin helping? It just made me feel drunk and sleepy but never lessened the pain.0 -
Do EVERYTHING the therapist tells you. I had a complete tear of my ACL, and torn cartilage ten years ago. Had a scope, an ACL repair, and another scope to cut loose some scar tissue. Load up on the pain pills before you go, and never slack off on PT.
I learned on monday that my ACL is torn again. Going in on the 5th for another repair. I feel your pain!0 -
I had it done too. Best thing is ice packs for 20 minutes every half hour or so. I take Ultram and it makes a big difference in the pain department. Good luck. 0 -
Good luck! get moving and the pain will improver faster. You'll be on you feet and back to yourself in no time. PT right after knee surgey is standard of care and gets the best results. 0 -

Oddly, in March of 2006, I had the same experience as Pa. Maybe our torn Meniscus wasn't as bad as some others here. I had a lot of pain before the operation, to the point of needing crutches, but shortly after the operation I could walk without crutches. In fact the whole thing was so easy it has just about been forgotten. Course, as I get older that happens more and more.0
