.38 Super

What is the opinion here, of this round? I am thinking about saving my pennies for this Glock 20 conversion Barrel next.

    I am thinking one is going end up in my gun safe. Possible tucked away near the bed at night, or possible found concealed around my waste area.

    What is your take and or experience on the cartridge?

    I am thinking Rock Island Armory 1911 in 38 Super

    Im purchasing a RIA handgun in .38 super. What mags fit this gun? Is it only the novak mags? -Dave

    Got a Springfield factory comp myself. Great gun. 50 fps faster than same bullet out of a 9mm. 44

    I've carried a 38 super for about 2 years, very impresive round. Beside that, you'll be in good company, John Dillinger packed a 38 super.

    I'm a .45 1911 shooter but I've always had a hankering for a .38 Super. The opportunity just hasn't presented itself when I've been flush.....lots of opportunity when I didn't have two nickles to rub together. Beach

    P.S. Doug, Yes in Mexico the .45 is considered a military munition and I believe civilians are precluded from owning them. Thus the .38 Super has become their round of choice. Beach

    Beach is correct about Mexico banning military calibers so the Super became popular as the 45 was illegal (now just about all citizens of mexico are prohibited from owning pistols so it doesn't matter much, now).

    I like the Super and currently have two, including the RIA which I like just fine. Great value at the price.

    In original form the Super launched a 130 FMJ with a pointed design at about 1300 FPS. Very high penetration (would defeat the vests commonly used by cops) but recently the factories have down-sized the load to barely over 1000 FPS (what a wimp). I load my 115 JHPs to around 1500 with good results. Approaches 357 mag levels. I have gone as high as 1700 but that was too much.

    The caliber must be enjoying a resurgence in popularity. At the last three gun shows, we have had several people come up and ask to see pistols in .38 Super caliber.

    I've always liked the little round, especially when my Coonan gave up feeding 100%.
    I've got several now, and they are a great choice for defense. I have a Witness Compact, a Colt Pre War 1911, and a Witness Fullsize; all in 38Super.
    The Witnesses hold 18 rounds, and with an extra mag, make sense if you live in an area with some crime.
    The guns aren't all that expensive, unless you've a hankering for a gold-and-diamond encrusted model; the Witness starts around $400, there's a Taurus for about $375, and you can have my old Colt for a measly $3,000.

    There's also the 9x23mm, a rimless version of the 38 Super, with more steam than the Super.
