Man, ammo is getting crazy expensive
Went to Wal Mart tonight to get some cheap ammo (Winchester target load) for 9mm and 40 cal. Spent $69.00 on 300 rounds. Also at Outdoor World to buy some defensive loads for 357 and that was 24.00 bucks for a box of 25. I blew my extra money in a matter of minutes. I feel its worth it, but dang!! Almost a hundred bucks for 325 rounds. Anybody have any suggestions on where to buy the cheapest ammo for the purpose of just plinking away at paper and keeping the action loose on the guns? This is killing me.

Tee-hee. Time to learn to reload! (And I say that mostly as a reminder to myself).
I went to Wall-(obscenity) two days ago and picked up:
100 20-GA shot-shells
100 Winchester White Box .38's
100 Winchester White Box .45 ACP's
50 Winchester White Box .357's
And it cost me $110. That's $110 for 350 rounds. OUCH!0 -
what isn't getting expensive these days..... 11-52-0 fertilizer, was told today it was going to jump about 200.00 a ton from 615.00 dollars a ton and is expected to hit a 1000.00/ton.couple years ago or so it was in the high 200.00 dollar range..... was quoted 2.79 a gal for number two ag diesel few days ago didn't do anything thinking it came down some maybe it will a little more checked today now looks like its going to be 3.00 a gal[:(] 0 -

Keep and Eye peeled at Gun Shows for good prices.
Also check the web for sites. But really watch what they charge for shipping.
Know ammoman.com has some good prices and shipping is inclued in those prices.
and ammotogo.com not bad prices.
Sometimes good is cheaperthandirt.com but watch shipping with them.
Ther were several others but lost the addresses when I upgrads my compter from Win 98.0 -

I checked into reloading, due to the rising ammo prices. I found that the cost savings wasn't worth it. Unless you shoot thousands of rounds a week, it isn't much cheaper to reload.
Reloading is a good way to get better bullets for targets and I may reload someday for that reason.
If you want cheap ammo looking into bulk.
I brought, if I remember right, a 1000 rounds of 9mm wolf for 130 dollars and a 1000 of 40 wolf for 230 dollars. That comes out to 18 dollars for 100 rounds.
Alot of ammo dealers on the net sell Wolf so take a look.
And why are you shooting 357 in your 357? If your just plinking shoot 38 specials.0 -

And why are you shooting 357 in your 357? If your just plinking shoot 38 specials.
C'mon. Most of the time you make a lot of sense. But: "why are you shooting 357 in your 357" is not one such example. Most of the time I do run .38 specials through that revolver, but if I'd wanted ONLY to shoot .38's I'd have purchased a .38. And if I wanted only to plink in the cheapest possible way, I'd own nothing other than .22's.
I put .357's through my .357 because I have a fine machine that is designed to throw .357's downrange and dammit, I'm going to do that now and then. I do it because it's fun, and it's different from shooting .38's. Shooting is my fun time. Sometimes I buy the really good steak to eat. Sometimes I shoot the spendy ammo. And sometimes I'm eating Ramen Noodles and running .22's through my Ruger.
Seriously, if I were trying to be frugal, I probably would own no guns. Or at least I would not try to shoot those guns that I owned.
But I am thinking bulk ammo for future savings. This isn't the time for me to be making bulk purchases because I'll be moving soon, but it's on my mind. I still think loading your own might represent a bit of a savings, but I haven't actually costed it all out yet, so I can't argue with you on that.0 -
I do agree with you Surge, but Jeff mention he just wanted to punch paper. If that's the case I would go as cheap as possible. If I could shoot 22's though a 357 I would. If paper was what I was shooting.
I would shoot 357 alot too, because I need to know what to expect from the gun and ammo should I have to defend yourself.
Reloading wouldn't be so bad for me, if I already had all the equipment and bass. Even so the components have gone up too.
I've been saving bass though. You never know maybe I'll get a good deal on the equipment and start reloading someday.
Also you need to go to bed spurge, it's like 3:30. I'm calling it a night too. Took a couple of night quill and can't even feel my fingers anymore.

I checked the price of .30 carbine & 30/06 from the DCM & thought it was high. Then last Saturday I went to a gun show to check on the prices.[xx(]
As soon as I got home I ordered 1000 rounds of .30 carbine (with shipping 19 cts/rd) & 240 rds of 30/06. (26cts/rd)
