Why are Russian bombers allowed to fly over one of aircraft carriers.
U.S. fighter planes intercepted two Russian bombers, including one that buzzed an American aircraft carrier in the western Pacific during the weekend, The Associated Press has learned.
A U.S. military official says that one Russian Tupolev 95 flew directly over the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz twice, at a low altitude of about 2,000 feet, while another bomber circled about 58 miles out. The official was speaking on condition of anonymity because the reports on the flights were classified as secret.
The Saturday incident, which never escalated beyond the flyover, comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and Russia over U.S. plans for a missile defense system based in Poland and the Czech Republic.
In Moscow, the RIA Novosti news agency reported Tuesday that the head of the Russian Air Force information service, Alexander Drobyshevsky, said the Russian bombers "were carrying out their assigned flights" and in strict compliance with the international airspace rules. "We are surprised by the noise that has been raised (over the flights)," he was quoted as saying.
Such Russian encounters with U.S. ships were common during the Cold War, but have been rare since then. Russia revived the Soviet-era practice of long-range patrols by strategic bombers over the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans last August.
The bombers were among four Russian Tupolev 95s launched from Ukrainka in the middle of the night, including one that Japanese officials say violated their country's airspace over an uninhabited island south of Tokyo.
U.S. officials tracked and monitored the bombers as two flew south along the Japanese coast, and two others flew farther east, coming closer to the Nimitz and the guided missile cruiser USS Princeton.

Putin has decided that he needs a new cold war with us to boost his own image of strength at home, he knows we won't shoot the planes down because we know there just being a pain in the arze and don't actually intend to do anything. He has people like chavez in Venezuela, and Kim Jong of N/Korea on his side they all take turns rattling there sabers, just enough to keep us on our toes.
I'm sure we do the same thing to them, look at the idea of putting long range missles in the former soviet states, talk about rattling sabers.0 -

I can tell a bunch of you have never served in the military.
I've seen it from the hangar deck of an American Aircraft Carrier. We never even went to General Quarters.
It's simply not that big a damn thang.

I'm glad that US and Russian military personnel are a heck of a lot more cool headed than your are, or we'd be in a nuclear wasteland by now.
Flyovers in international waters are very common, the planes were tracked and escorted by US fighters every inch of the way once they got close enough to be a threat, the Russians know that a hostile move would mean getting shot down and war, our guys know that an unprovoked hostile move would mean war. Calm the f*** down already0 -

I know that the ship has cap flying all the time.
it was on radar along time before it got close.
if the skipper said the word, we would be at a shooting

One of my duties on the plane was photographer when we rigged Pact and Chicom shipping. Overflys are very common at sea. We just can't open the bombbay doors or flush the honeybucket over them. 0 -

war right now. so the skipper knew what was going on.Actually, it depends on the state of alert, which depends on where you are (threat area) and what has been detected by the various sensors! It can range from sitting in your flight suit in the Ready Room, to sitting in your aircraft on the catapult, to sitting in your aircraft with the engines turning and ready to go to full power and launch, to doing as you say - in the air and on station. I've been through all of them, especially when we steamed between Hawaii and the Philippines in the early 70's.0 -

We don't pitch a fit every time a seagull poops near one of our ships; it's the same thing. If one of those lumbering Cold War-era bombers got close, it's because our Navy let them.0
