how best to keep gun "at ready"
how do you guys keep your at home gun accessible yet safe from children and such. also what do you guys use for an at home gun. i live in a rural area with my wife and 15 month old son. i currently have a ruger kp345 under our headboard but when i am out of town my wife likes the ruger bisley 45 colt because thats what she has the most experience with which we just set on top of the headboard til i get back. we have very little crime here it just makes us feel better to have one in the bedroom.

XD45 and up high were small kids cant get to it, i dont have any small kids but you never know who or what will show up around here,

I always kept the "ready" hand guns high enough for the kid not too reach them when that was an issue. Since he has been old enough to know not to play with them it is either on me or on the night stand. Along with the fact of knowing not to play with them he knows all he has to do is ask to handle them anytime. Most of the guns are in the gun room.
If you do go with a long gun, or auto pistol keeping the chamber empty and having to cycle the action is USUALLY too hard for kids as they do not have the strength to do it. I would not do the same with a revolver as they are not that hard to cock.0 -

If you don't already have one, get a dog that barks when someone is outside your house. You'll soon learn from his bark weather it is someone who is not a threat or someone with ill intent. Right now I have one in bed room, one in basement over AC duct, one in truck and one in garage. All loaded. 0 -
when the kids were real young kept the home defense gun in one of those safes that works with your finger prints it worked pretty good after they got old enough just taught them gun safety had no problems 0 -
i do keep the magezine in it but not in hte chamber. as for a dog i have one. barks all night at coyote and deer as is. i have had twice now(in about 4 years) people come walking into my house in the middle of the night, just people going into the ditch and getting stuck, one time i had the gun in hand ready but he ided himself after i yelled so no danger of accidently shooting anyone.
most of the time we dont lock the doors around here which is stupid but i just cant get in the habit of it i guess. the nearest town is 7 miles away with a population of 24000 -

I keep all my guns loaded and placed strategically around the apartment...
And I keep kids out.

Hard to say..i have kids.....6 and up...u cant really...u cant do it and be safe. heres what i do. we put kids to bed and then take my pistol from the top shelf of my closet and put it in my night stand. in the a.m i put it back up..also my nightstand is sideways between my bed and wall with ony inches seperating it. so if my kid came in and tried to open it i would know. not fullproof but it works for me... i couldnt sleep 12 ft away from my gun at night..if i could i would just keep it in my safe 0 -
642CT on my person til bedtime. On the night stand til I get up.

Sounds like you owe it to your wife and child to develop a habit of locking the doors. There are two towns 12 miles from here, one of 1200 people, and one of 5000, and I lock the house up if I'm going to be gone for more than about 5 minutes.0 -
3 trained Dobermans, and a Boxer which all have run of the yard and house to come and go as they please. We have a 4 ft chain link fence around our yard, and they know what their supposed to protect. Plus a Mossberg 590 12 GA in the Gun Rack beside my side of the bed, and a Glock 31 .357sig on the nightstand. And my wife has a Taurus PT 92 AFS 9MM in her night stand drawer. I figure the dogs will have lunch before a crook could make it up stairs. 0 -

Well, I know where there is 5 loaded guns right now... Im the youngest, and we have all been learned NOT to even touch those guns unless its an emergency.. Those are no-no guns. The others, i can handle as long as I check and am 100% positive there is nothing in it.
My guns I can handle whenever I want... I gaurntee they arent loaded, but I have a mag for every one of them loaded in my ammo box0 -

Never been in that situation but I do remember what it was like growing up not having to lock the doors. Never would do that now a days no matter where I lived.[:(!] All kinds of shady creatures roaming these lands[V]0 -

Remington 870 Magnum Express next to the bed in a closet w/o a round chambered. I can get to it and get it out of the bag in about 10 seconds. Keeping a round out of the chamber allows me to inform whomever is in the house that they are not welcome when I pump it. 0 -

In a home invasion scenario, you may not have 10 seconds to spare.
Not to mention pumping the 870 will definitely give away your position.0 -
