Federal law does not allow a person under the age of 21 to purchase a handgun from a dealer. Most state laws would allow it.0 -

Either you are an adult at 18 or you aren't. I also don't know why the drinking age isn't lowered to 18 and the driving age isn't raised to 18. There are just certain things that mark adulthood. 0 -

MI had drinking age lowered to 18 back in the 70's about 1980 it was put on the ballot to raise it back to 21, even though there were enough registered voters in the 18-21 yo range it would affect, the measure passed, if the 18-21 yo voters would have turned out, it would not have passed.0 -
I always heard that all the states had to lift the drinkng age to 21 or the govt would cut off federal funds. 0 -

If I am not mistaken, the Federal Gov't offered a tax cut or some type of voucher(or something) to the states that changed their drinking age to 21. In other words, it would have happened eventually, even if it wouldn't have back then.

CR I'm sorry that you will have to wait until you are 21 to buy a handgun. Based on some of your post I hope you never get your hands on one.
They should raise the age in which everyone is considered an adult too 21.

i dont know what it is like in the u.s. but here when you are 18 you are classed as an adult...we used to have the stupid law here that said at 18 you were old enough to fight in a war but not old enough to drink legally! you couldnt vote until you were 21! but you could drive a car legally at 17...now if you are 18 you are classed as an adult and can vote, drink, and its still 17 before you can get your licence and drive on your own.18 before you can apply for a gun licence , but you can apply for a junior permit at 12...with a lot of restrictions. i think personally that if you are old enough to go to a war then you are old enough to be treated as an adult. 0 -
As usual this makes no sense. At 18 you can be armed and die for this country,vote but can't buy a handgun from any place you wish?

This is an old, old, often debated issue. What is the appropriate age to drive, drink, vote, go to war? These decisions are primarily made by those who have come thru these various periods of life and are aware of the level of maturity at each.
-Driving age is dictated by states.
-Drinking age was 21, dropped to 18, then raised again to 21... 18
didn't work out.
-Voting age was 21, dropped to 18.
-Going to war is an invalid argument; its done under adult
supervision - same as the others which have restrictions.
"Rights" vs "Privileges" is a much better argument.0 -
Yeah- makes no sense. At age 20 had an Infantry PLATOON- but could not purchase a 45 auto (like the one hanging on my belt that I was issued). On the other hand, if you keep expecting politicians to make sense, you are sure to be disappointed. [:p] 0 -

Being 27, the issue is pretty low on the priority list. If there was something I couldn't live without when I was 18, I gave the money to someone else and they bought it for me.

If 18 is old enough to go to war, it is old enough to vote out those who would or would not send you out to fight. If the wrong guy gets voted into office, you should be able to go home and have a drink.[:D]
As far as the gun, a parent should regulate what a child does up until 18. If the parent thinks the kid is responsible enough to carry a gun, the kid should be able to. If the kid gets in trouble, the parent should bear most of the responsibility.[;)]
The constitution knows no age limit, but a parent decides what is best for his or her child.0 -
The U.S. Army stuck a Beretta in my son's hands at age 19. Besides that, I gave him a Ruger .22 pistol at age 16.
I got my first pistol at 15, also a Ruger .22.0 -

Funny, in 1977 I was 20, and I had a Llama .380, a H & R .22 and a Ruger single six, all registered with the MP's on Ft Hood.
But I was just a squad leader in a engineer BN......[;)]
When I went through basic in 75, the EM clubs would only serve 3.2 beer, but on my 18th birthday, I shared a 12 pack of "real" beer with my buds.
Like I said before, in MI, it was up to the voters, the 18 YO voters could not be bothered to vote for their right to drink.
It sucked, the 18 - 20 YO drunk chicks were a lot of fun[}:)][:0]0 -
